If you’ve never made a layered frozen drink before, don’t be intimidated – it’s really easy. The trick is to gently spoon the top layers on rather than pouring them, and you’ll have beautiful defined layers that will make you look like a professional bartender. Ingredients

  • Tequila, divided
  • Fresh lime juice, divided
  • Agave nectar, divided
  • Blue curacao
  • Triple sec (or other orange liqueur), divided
  • Cream of coconut
  • Ice, divided
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Lime slices or wedges for garnish
  • Margarita salt for the rim

Instructions

Step One: Make the Blue Layer

  • Run a lime wedge along the rim of a tall glass and then dip the rim into a bowl of salt.
  • Add 1 ounce tequila, 1 ½ ounces blue curacao, 1 ounce lime juice, ½ ounce agave nectar, and 1 ½ cups ice to your blender. Blend until smooth.
  • Divide the blue margarita evenly between the 3 cocktail glasses.

Step Two: Add the White Layer

  • Rinse your blender and add 1 ounce triple sec, 1 ounce tequila, 1½ ounces cream of coconut, 1 ounce lime juice, and 1 ½ cups ice. Blend until smooth.
  • Gently spoon the white margarita on top of the blue mixture in each cocktail glass.

Step Three:  Add the Red Layer

  • To make the third layer, rinse your blender again and then add 1 ounce triple sec, 1 ounce tequila, ½ ounce agave, ½ ounce lime juice, and 1 ½ cups frozen strawberries. Blend until smooth.
  • Gently spoon the strawberry layer over top of the white layer in each cocktail glass.
  • Garnish each drink with a fresh lime wedge.

Tips and Suggestions

  • You can switch the order of the red and blue margarita layers, but I recommend keeping the white layer in the middle. If the red and blue layers are next to each other and start to blend together and there won’t be straight lines. 
  • For best results, add the ice last and start with just a little bit, adding extra ice gradually until you reach the perfect slushy consistency.
  • Skip the bottled lime juice and always use fresh. The taste is so much better that it’s well with the effort of squeezing a few limes.

Variations

  • Save time and skip the layering by making margarita flights. Serve each color of margarita in a separate small glass or mini mason jar!
  • If you don’t have tequila but still want to make this festive layered cocktail, try using vodka instead.
  • Make individual red, white, and blue margaritas on the rocks. Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker instead of blending, then strain into ice-filled glasses.
  • Firecracker margarita – just before serving, sprinkle pop rocks on top of the drink. They’ll crackle and pop as you serve the drink and it makes it festive like fireworks!

Can I Make Red, White and Blue Margaritas in Advance?

You can mix all the liquid ingredients in advance to save time. Then when you’re ready to serve, just add ice and blend.

What Type of Tequila Should I Use?

The quality of your ingredients makes a big difference, so I wouldn’t recommend selecting a cheap tequila. I like to go with a good quality blanco tequila like Sauza or Patron Silver.

  • 3 ounces tequila divided
  • 2 ½ ounces fresh lime juice divided

Instructions

  • Prepare your cocktail glasses by running a lime wedge along the rim of a tall cocktail glass, and then dip into the margarita salt.
  • To your blender, add 1 ounce tequila, 1 ounce lime juice, ½ ounce agave nectar, 1 ½ ounces blue curacao, and 1 ½ cups ice. Blend until smooth.

  • Divide evenly between the 3 cocktail glasses.
  • For the white layer, rinse your blender well and add 1 ounce triple sec, 1 ounce tequila, 1 ounce lime juice, 1 ½ ounces cream of coconut, and 1 ½ cups ice. Blend until smooth.

  • Gently spoon the white margarita mixture on top of the blue mixture.
  • For the red margarita layer, rinse your blender and then add 1 ounce triple sec, 1 ounce tequila, ½ ounce lime juice, ½ ounce agave, and 1 ½ cups frozen strawberries. Blend until smooth.

  • Gently spoon the red margarita mixture over top of the white layer.
  • Garnish each drink with fresh lime and enjoy!
