My Easy French Onion Dip gets devoured every single time I make it, I’m already planning to double the batch for next time! It’s made with just five pantry staples, no cooking, no processed taste like the store-bought stuff. Just stir it together and let the fridge do the rest.

My Homemade French Onion Dip

I started making my own French onion dip years ago after one too many disappointing tubs from the grocery store. Store-bought versions always tasted flat and a little too processed for my taste, so I set out to make one with real, simple flavors instead.

This dip has become my go-to for game days, potlucks, and lazy weekend snacking. It takes five minutes to stir together, and the hardest part is waiting the 30 minutes for the flavors to blend. There’s no chopping, no sautéing, and no dishes beyond one bowl.

When I make it, I don’t tell anyone so that I can get the first bite! Otherwise, my husband and my son may eat it all before I get any.

Why My French Onion Dip is the Best

  • No cooking required – everything mixes together cold in one bowl, so there’s no stovetop step and no extra dishes to wash.
  • Real, simple ingredients – just sour cream, dried minced onion, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt, so you know exactly what’s in it.
  • Make-ahead friendly – it actually tastes better the longer it sits, so it’s perfect for prepping the night before a party.

French Onion Dip Ingredients

Ingredients for French Onion Dip include: sour cream, dried minced onion, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt. A bowl of A bowl of potato chips, sliced cucumbers, carrots, and celery can also be seen on wooden board.

Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe. Scroll down to the full recipe card for the specific amounts.

  • Sour cream – the creamy base that gives the dip its classic tang. Full-fat works best for texture, but light sour cream will also work.
  • Dried minced onion – softens as it sits and gives the dip real onion flavor and texture in every bite.
  • Onion powder – layers in extra onion flavor without adding more texture.
  • Garlic powder – rounds out the flavor with a subtle savory note.
  • Salt – brings all the flavors together. Adjust to taste depending on what you’re serving it with.

Substitutions or Variations

  • No sour cream? Greek yogurt works as a substitute and gives the dip a slightly tangier flavor. (I actually prefer Greek yogurt. You can also do half Greek Yogurt and half sour cream.)
  • Want it extra creamy? Use a half and half mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise.
  • Prefer a lighter dip? Use low-fat or light sour cream, the texture stays just as good.
  • Want more onion flavor? Add an extra teaspoon of dried minced onion before chilling.

  • Don’t skip the chill time – the dried onion needs at least 30 minutes to soften and release its flavor. The dip tastes flat if you serve it right away.
  • Make it a day ahead – the flavor actually improves overnight, so this is an easy one to prep the day before a party.
  • Stir once more before serving – the dip can separate slightly as it chills, so give it a quick stir right before you set it out.
  • Double the batch – this disappears fast, especially with chips and veggies on the table, so I always make a double batch now.
  • Use a good quality sour cream – it’s the main flavor here, so a full-fat, high-quality sour cream makes a noticeable difference.

French Onion Dip FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! This dip actually tastes better when made a day ahead, since the dried onion has more time to soften and the flavors have more time to blend.

Why does the dip need to chill?

The dried minced onion is crunchy right out of the container. Chilling gives it time to absorb moisture from the sour cream and soften, which is what gives the dip its classic texture and flavor.

Can I use fresh onion instead of dried?

Dried minced onion is what gives this dip its classic flavor and texture. Fresh onion will make the dip much wetter and change the flavor, so it’s not a direct swap.

Is this dip gluten-free?

Yes, all the ingredients in this recipe are naturally gluten-free. Always double check labels if you have a severe allergy.

Storage Instructions

  • Room temperature – This dip contains dairy, so it shouldn’t sit out longer than 2 hours.
  • Refrigerate – Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze – This dip doesn’t freeze well. The sour cream base separates and becomes watery once thawed, so it’s best made fresh.
