Red, White, and Blue Snack Mix

This patriotic snack mix is so delicious. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and salty. It’s a big hit with kids, but you’ll have people grabbing big handfuls where ever you take it.

We love to make this starting Memorial Day weekend. The colors are perfect to get us in the mood for SUMMER!!! But we also tend to make it throughout the entire summer, especially for any gatherings and picnics we go to for the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Ingredients

  • red, and blue candy melts
  • Rice Chex cereal
  • powdered sugar
  • vegetable shortening
  • red, white and blue M&M’s
  • yogurt covered raisins
  • yogurt covered pretzels

Instructions

four photos with process: spoon coating chex cereal with blue melted candy, zip top bag with chex mix covered in powdered sugar and blue candy melts; open zip top bag; blue chex, red chex, yogurt covered raisins and yogurt covered pretzels and red, white, and blue M&Ms in clear bowl on counter
  • In a double boiler or microwave safe bowl melt red candy melts and 1 tablespoon of shortening. If using the microwave heat in 30 second increments stirring in between, until melted and smooth. If using a double boiler heat over med/high heat and stir frequently until smooth.
  • While the candy is melting place 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar in a large zip close baggie, and lay out a piece of parchment or wax paper for cooling the cereal.
  • Once the candy has melted pour in one cup of Rice Chex. Gently stir until the cereal is completely, evenly coated with the candy mixture.
  • Spoon the cereal into the baggie and gently toss and shake the bag to coat the cereal with powdered sugar. Pour the covered cereal into a sieve and shake to remove excess powdered sugar.
  • Spread evenly across the prepared wax paper or parchment to cool and harden.
  • Repeat with the blue candy melts and second cup of Chex.
  • Once your Chex are completely cooled it is time to assemble the snack mix.
  • In a large bowl combine the Chex, yogurt covered pretzels, M&M’s and yogurt covered raisins. Gently stir to evenly distribute & serve!
  • Store in an airtight container.

How Do You Store Snack Mix?

Store this Chex mix in an air tight container. It will last for several days and does not have to be refrigerated.

Other Holidays

This is such a versatile recipe that you can easily swap out the colors and make it for different holidays.

  • Valentine’s Day – use pinke, red, and white M&Ms
  • St. Patrick’s Day – use green and white M&Ms (they even sell key lime flavored green M&Ms this time of year)
  • Easter – use pastel colors like pink, yellow, and light green
  • Halloween – use orange and black or brown
  • Christmas – use red and green candy melts, and red and green M&Ms

  1. You say this will last several days…how many is several? I’d like to make it today for a 4th of July party 6 days away. Will it still be just as fresh tasting as day 1?

  2. I’d say 2-3 days. 6 days won’t taste like day 1

  3. I found white fudge covered prtezels. Has anyone tried those and how is it.

  4. I’m sure those would be great. You can’t really mess up this recipe.
