Variations and Add-ins for Patriotic No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream
- Nuts: For a little crunch, you can add chopped pecans, walnuts, or macadamia nuts to the ice cream mixture before freezing it.
- Sauces: Its super easy to give this ice cream a swirl look by adding a little blueberry sauce or strawberry sauce. For homemade sauce, all you have to do is add a couple teaspoons of water and a teaspoon of lemon juice to a 1/2 cup of blueberry jam or strawberry jam. Once the ice cream has been in the freezer for about an hour, you can just add it to the top of the ice cream and use a butter knife to make a swirl pattern. Then place it back in the freezer to firm up.
- Favors: We used vanilla extract, but vanilla bean paste works really great. You can also add other extract flavors, like almond extract or butter extract to give the ice cream different flavors.
- Fresh berries: For a really fresh and bright addition, you can gently fold in some fresh strawberries or fresh blueberries.
- Cookies: At the beginning of summer, there are usually red Oreos for July 4th and those would be perfect in this! We used golden Oreos, but you can use any brand of vanilla sandwich cookies. You can also use regular chocolate Oreos if you prefer.
- Candies: Fold in some chocolate chips or even some M&Ms that are patriotic colors.
Can I Substitute with Regular Milk?
For best results, no churn recipes need the beaten heavy cream to add volume and creaminess to the ice cream. The sweetened condensed milk adds the perfect amount of sweetness. So, it’s not recommended that you use whole milk as a substitute.
No Churn Ice Cream Top Tips
- For best results always chill the mixing bowls before using. This helps the cream to whip up firmer and helps keep all the other ingredients nice and cold until you’re ready to freeze.
- Make sure you keep the heavy cream in the fridge right until you’re ready to use it.
- Keep the ice cream covered well with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the freezer. It’s best when eaten within a few weeks.
- In order to give the ice cream and light and creamy texture, be sure you whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. That means, when you pull out the whisk, the cream will hold a high peak.
