How to Make Pull Apart Pigs in a Blanket
Step One: Cut the Dough
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9-inch springform pan with non-stick spray.
- Unroll the first pizza dough, and stretch it out, the dough should be about ⅛ inch thick.
Note: You may have to stretch the sheet of dough out a little
- Cut the dough into 36 1-inch by 2-inch pieces.
Step Two: Brush with Butter
- Melt the butter by microwaving for about 30 seconds and brush it over the top of the dough.
Step Three: Wrap the Sausages
- Roll each of the cocktail sausages with one of the pieces of dough. As you do, layer them around the edge of the springform pan, working your way in. You want them to be close together, but not smashed against one another.
- Keep rolling all of the lil smokies and adding them to the pan, then unroll the 2nd dough and repeat the stretching and butter.
- Roll the remaining smokies until your pan is full.
Step Four: Bake until Golden Brown
- Cover the springform pan with foil and bake the uncooked pigs for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and return to the oven for an additional 15 minutes to brown the tops.
Note: If after 15 minutes your tops aren’t browned enough, place them under the broiler for just a minute or two.
Recipe Variations and Add-ins
- Seasonings: Brush a little butter on the tops of the wrapped sausages and sprinkle on some poppy seeds, sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning.
- Dough: We used the premade dough from the grocery store but if you have a homemade dough recipe you prefer, you can always use it instead. You can also use crescent dough, but the baking time may slightly vary.
- Cheesy pigs: Before adding the lil smokies to the dough, you can add a small slice of cheddar or American cheese.
- Cocktail wieners: If you prefer, you can use regular hot dogs or smoked sausage links and cut them into smaller pieces.
- Egg wash: If you’re wanting to add a shiny coating to the tops of the pigs in a blanket, just brush the tops with a beaten large egg before baking.
What If I Don’t Have a Spring-form Pan?
You can always prepare them the traditional way on a lined baking sheet. Just make sure you place the seam side down so that they won’t pull apart while baking.
What Dipping Sauce Can I Serve?
These little bites go great with BBQ sauce, Beer Cheese dip, Copycat Chick-fil-a Sauce or honey mustard. If you’re serving them as breakfast pigs in a blanket you can add a side of your favorite jelly or jam.
Can I Freeze Leftover Pigs in a Blanket
You sure can. Once cooled, you’ll want to go ahead and pull them apart from one another. Flash-freeze them in a single layer for about an hour. Then, just place the frozen pigs in a blanket in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. To reheat just place the thawed wrapped smokies in the microwave for about 15-30 seconds or until warmed through.
