Variations and Add-in’s
- Strawberry flavor: The cake mix gives the fudge great flavor. But if you want a more intense flavor, you can add a little strawberry extract or freeze-dried strawberries to the melted chocolate chips before layering in the baking dish.
- Strawberry swirl: For this recipe, we went with the layered look. You can also give it a fun swirl pattern. To do so, you will need to pour the first layer and let it set up for just a few minutes. Then add the second layer. With a wooden skewer, gently drag the tip though the layers of fudge.
- Cake mix: Change up the cake mix based on the occasion. Instead of using strawberry cake mix, you can use funfetti cake mix. Lemon cake mix is awesome for summery fudge. Using a white cake mix with a little food coloring makes this a great recipe for any day of the year.
- Nuts: If you want to add a little crunch to your fudge, finely chopped macadamia nut or walnuts are great choice. In order to get clean slices, you’ll want to finely chop the nuts you add.
How Do I Store this Homemade Strawberry Fudge?
It can sit out at room temperature in an airtight container as long as it’s a cool dry place for up to week or longer. If you like it eat it chilled, you can also store it in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
If you have leftovers or if you want to make it in advance, you can freeze it for up to about 3 months. Just match sure it is wrapped really well with plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. To thaw, just unwrap and set it out on the countertop for about an hour.
Can I Use Fresh Strawberries?
Real strawberries contain a lot of moisture and will cause the fudge from setting up like it should. Freeze-dried strawberries are a great addition if you’re wanting to add more strawberry flavor.
