They are such a big hit – not only do they look amazing, but they taste great too. It’s like being a kid again. These delicious fourth of July jellos shots make adults feel like a kid again eating a fun, colorful treat, but this time it’s got a little something extra.
Ingredients
- 6 oz. cherry jello mix – we like using cherry instead of strawberry jello because the red color is deeper
- 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 packets of Knox unflavored gelatin
- 6 oz. blue gelatin – we used berry blue jello mix
- 8 cups water
- 2 cups vodka – we used the red, white, and berry vodka
- Whipped cream and maraschino cherries for topping
- 16 (3 oz.) plastic shot glasses like these
Instructions
Make each flavor of Jello, one at a time, and layer then chill. Follow these simple instructions:
Step One: Make Blue Jello Layer
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Remove from the heat and whisk the berry blue jello mix into the boiling water until the gelatin is dissolved.
- Add 1 cup cold water and 1 cup vodka, whisk again.
- Pour into plastic shot cups, filling about ⅓ full. Discard any extra blue jello or pour into a separate container.
- Move to the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.
Step Two: Make White Middle Layer
- Next, in a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Remove from the heat and add sweetened condensed milk. Whisk, then add 2 packets of Knox gelatin. Whisk again until well combined.
- Add white jello layer to the shot cups, on top of the blue jello, filling to about the ⅔ full point, making sure to leave enough room for the red layer. Discard any extra white jello mixture.
- Move back to the refrigerator to chill for 2 hours.
Step Three: Make Red Jello Layer
- Finally, in a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
- Remove from the heat and whisk in cherry jello mix, stirring until dissolved.
- Add 1 cup cold water and 1 cup vodka. Whisk again.
- Add to the shot cups for the final layer. Discard any extra jello you don’t need.
- Move back to the refrigerator to chill a final time, for 2 hours.
Step Four: Decorate
- Before serving, top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.
Suggestions and Alternatives
- Patriotic Sprinkles – add red, white, and blue sprinkles on top of the whipped cream for added flair
- Fruit – to keep with the red, white and blue theme, after you add the whipped cream, top with a blueberry. You can also switch out the cherry for sliced strawberry
Certainly! Just replace the alcohol with the same amount of cold water and continue the directions.
Can I Make These Jello Shots in Advance?
Because of the nature of this layered treat, you have to make them somewhat in advance, but you can make them up to two days prior to when you plan to serve them. Just store in the refrigerator, covered. Wait to decorate with whipped cream and any other decorations until just before serving.
In fact, if you’re looking for a fun jello treat for kids, try our orange rind jello. These are such a fun treat for a kid’s birthday party.
Can I Use a Different Alcohol?
Yes, you can swap out the vodka for any type of liquor you like. There are several
brands and flavors of vodka you can use in this recipe. A white rum or coconut rum would work well and be perfect for summer.
How to Make These for Other Holidays
- Valentine’s Day – red, white, and pink – use strawberry or watermelon for the pink layer
- St. Patrick’s Day – use lime or lime and white
