We love St Patrick’s Day at my house because we know it will be ushering in warmer weather and all the fun springtime activities. To celebrate, we usually have a traditional Irish meal, followed by yummy St. Paddys desserts like this cool and refreshing Copycat Shamrock Shake, these adorable little St Patrick’s Day Cake Pops or these sweet Lucky Charms Mud Buddies.
But what better way to create some Irish cheer than with these bright and colorful green jello shots? Made with Jamison Irish Whisky and lime jello, they are topped with creamy whipped topping and sprinkles for a super festive, boozy treat. They are so tasty they could easily serve double duty as sweet bite-sized desserts and tasty shot-sized cocktail.
They only take minutes to mix up, so make a batch, or two, to serve at your next St. Patrick’s Day get-together or backyard BBQ and let the party begin!
What’s Needed to Make These Easy Green Jello Shots
- Lime Gelatin: We use lime Jell-O brand to make these shots the perfect green color.
- Water: Boiling water is essential in getting the gelatin to set up.
- Irish Whiskey: We used Jamison Irish Whiskey, but you can use your favorite brand.
- Whipped Cream: Tops the jello shots off with a creamy white layer (optional)
- St. Patrick’s Day or Green Sprinkles: Used to garnish the shots and give them an extra added touch.

How to Make Our Green Jello Shot Recipe
These lime jello shots are so simple to make. With just minutes of prep time, you are done, and they are ready to chill
Step one: Boil Water and Add Jell-O
In a medium saucepan, boil 2 cups of water.
Once boiling, remove from heat and stir green jello powder into the hot water, whisking until dissolved.
Step Two: Add Cold Water
Stir in 1 cup cold water,
Step Three: Add Whiskey
Add and 8 oz. Jameson.
Step Four: Pour Into Shot Cups
- Put 18 shot cups on a baking sheet (for easy transport to the refridgerator)
- Pour mixture evenly into the 2 oz. jello shot cups.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours, until Jello is set.
- Top with whipped cream and festive sprinkles.
Tips for the Best Green Jello Shots
- For best results use the little plastic cups that are made for jello shots. They are shallow and flexible plastic containers that make it easy to slurp out the shot! You can also use regular disposable plastic shot glasses.
- If the jello is sticking to the edges of the cup, just gently run a butter knife around the edges and they will easily turn loose.
- Don’t be tempted use only alcohol and no water. In order for the shot to solidify enough to hold its shape, there has to be enough hot water in the mix to activate the gelatin.
- If you want to make these into cute little shapes, like 4 leaf clovers or hearts, you can make them using silicone molds. Just spray the molds lightly with cooking spray them wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Place the mold on a baking sheet and fill. Place in the fridge until they set up.

Spooky Halloween Jello Shots: Make these into adorable Halloween jello shots by adding gummy worms. Place the worms so that they are hanging out of the jello shot for a creepy Halloween party boozy treat.
Christmas Jello Shots: Rim the shot glass with red sugar to give them classic Christmas colors. You can also add a cherry on top for another a perfect way to add red and green to your Christmas party!

You sure can! And that really comes in handy when you’re working on the other recipes for your St Patrick’s Day party menu. Just make them the night before and place a piece of plastic wrap loosely over the tops of the shot filled plastic cups. They will actually stay fresh for a couple of days in advance.
How Long Can Jell-O Shots Sit Out?
If you’re entertaining and the tray of jello shots will be out of the refrigerator, they’ll last up to 45 minutes but should be refrigerated if they aren’t eaten before then.
