Recipe Variations
- Orange juice – You can use 2 cups of fresh orange juice instead of orange juice concentrate.
- Fruit – Feel free to add other fresh fruit. Blend in some pineapple, mango, peaches, or strawberries for extra fruity goodness.
- Nondairy milk – We used cow’s milk but you can use coconut milk, soy milk, or almond milk for non-dairy options.
- Protein shake – Add a protein boost with vanilla Greek yogurt or protein powder.
- Orange juice smoothie – Make it an extra decadent treat by blending in a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some sherbet. This does increase the added sugar so you may want to cut back on the powdered sugar that is added.
- Popsicles – If you want to turn this into a frozen treat, you can pour the mixture in a popsicle mold and freeze for about 4-6 hours.
- Boozy Julius – For an adult version, you can add a splash for vodka or rum.

Storage Instructions
- It’s best to enjoy these smoothies fresh the day they’re made. If you do have any leftovers you can store them in the fridge for up to 1 day. As the ice melts it won’t be as frothy.
The original recipe for Orange Julius was a creamy drink created at an orange juice stand in Los Angeles, CA in the late 1920s by Julius Freed. In 1929, Freed’s real estate broker Bill Hamlin wanted to develop a frothy orange juice that was easier on the stomach, and the Orange Julius drink was created. It’s been sold at Orange Julius stores in shopping malls for years.
It’s best enjoyed fresh, but you can blend it and store it in the fridge for a few hours. Give it a quick blend again before serving to restore the frothy texture.
To make it thicker, add more ice cubes or reduce the amount of water. To make it thinner, add a bit more water or reduce the amount of ice.
Yes, you can pour the mixture into an ice cube tray and freeze it before blending it again.
A blender is essential for getting the smooth, frothy texture that Orange Julius is known for. However, you can try using an immersion blender if you don’t have a traditional blender.
You won’t see Orange Julius stores any more but you can still get the drinks. Dairy Queen purchased the Orange Julius brand in 1987 and have the popular drink on most of their menus.
