Homemade Fajita Seasoning Recipe

When it comes to easy Mexican recipes, fajitas are a sure way to get dinner on the table in a hurry. But everyone knows that the key to the best fajitas starts with the right seasoning. That’s what you can expect when you make this homemade version. Not only does DIY seasoning taste better than store-bought versions, but you can also be assured that there are no unwanted additives or preservatives.

Another great thing is that by creating your own spice mixes, you’re able to customize each of the ingredients and adjust the spice level to suit your personal preference.  Make up a big batch of this seasoning to keep on hand or to even give as a housewarming gift. Why We Love This Recipe

  • Simple ingredients – It only takes five pantry staple ingredients and a couple of minutes of prep time to whip up a big batch of this taco seasoning blend.
  • Great flavor – With a blend of earthy spices, this homemade seasoning gives Mexican food a wonderful, savory flavor.
  • Budget-friendly – Making your own seasoning mixes is an overall cheaper alternative to most store-bought seasoning packets.
  • Healthier option – You get to choose the brand and quality of spices that are free from unnecessary additives and fillers, as you see in store-bought mixes.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Fajita Seasoning in five small glass bowls containing different powdered spices are arranged on a wooden board. The spices include salt, ground smoked paprika, chili powder, ground cumin, and ground garlic powder. A gray cloth is in the background.
  • Chili powder – use one that you are familiar with because different brands and types from the grocery store can vary in spiciness.
  • Smoked paprika – you can use sweet paprika if you prefer, but smoked paprika gives it a smokier flavor.
  • Cumin – classic Mexican ingredient used in most seasonings.
  • Granulated garlic – you can use garlic powder if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Salt – fine sea salt is my favorite when it comes to this seasoning, but any salt that isn’t coarse is great.

Tips for Making Your Own Spice Blends:

  1. Storage – Keep your DIY Fajita Seasoning in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or spice cabinet, away from direct sunlight or heat sources, like your oven.
  2. Container – Store it in your favorite glass spice jar or a small mason jar.
  3. Don’t freeze it- Freezing it can cause moisture to build up in the container. It’s best to use it while it’s still fresh.
  4. Label it – Label the jar with the date you made it to help you know when it’s time to make a fresh batch.
  5. Use fresh- For best results, use homemade Fajita Seasoning within 9 months to a year for the most flavor.

Different Ways to Use This Seasoning

  • Fajitas- You can use this recipe to give any kind of fajita recipe the perfect blend of spices, whether it’s chicken or steak fajitas, shrimp fajitas, or veggie fajitas.
  • Fajita salad dressing – Give your favorite ranch dressing a Mexican twist with a generous sprinkling of this seasoning blend.
  • Fajita marinade – We directly season meat with this blend, but you can add it to a little olive oil and a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce to make an easy marinade.
  • Creamy Mexican dip – Add a dash of homemade fajita seasoning to sour cream, Greek yogurt, or cream cheese to create a flavorful dip. You can also add it to your favorite homemade salsa recipes.
  • Grilled or roasted veggies – Season a medley of cooked vegetables, such as bell peppers, onions, zucchini, and corn, with a sprinkle of homemade seasoning for added flavor.

How Much Fajita Seasoning Per Pound of Meat Do I Need?

A good rule of thumb when deciding on how much fajita seasoning blend to use is to plan on a couple of tablespoons per pound of meat.
