Grinch Hot Chocolate Recipe
After Thanksgiving has come and gone, one of our favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit is to bring out all the Christmas decorations, put up our tree and then curl up to watch our favorite Christmas movies. Our top favorite Christmas movie is the Dr. Seuss classic, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” (the original, not the Jim Carey version, of course). So, of course we are super excited about this new recipe for Grinch Hot Chocolate!

🛒 What’s Need to Make Grinch Green Hot Cocoa?
- Whole milk
- White chocolate chips
- Vanilla extract
- Peppermint extract
- Green food coloring
- Whipped cream for topping
- Red candy hearts for garnish
🥄 How to Make Easy Grinch Hot Cocoa
Step One: Heat the Milk and Chocolate
- In a medium saucepan add the milk and stir in the white chocolate chips.
- Turn heat to medium low and stir constantly to make sure the chocolate melts but does not burn. You want the hot chocolate to come to barely a simmer.
TIP: Use a spoon or spatula that’s long enough to stir the chocolate chips on the bottom of the pan because you want to keep them moving until they melt.
Step Two: Add the Extracts
- Once the chocolate is all melted remove the pan from the heat.
- Add in your vanilla and peppermint extract to the warm milk and melted chocolate mixture.
Step Three: Make it Green and Serve!
- Stir in your green food coloring until you get that Grinch green color. Pour into heat proof mugs.
- Top each mug of green hot cocoa with whipped cream and some heart sprinkles.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Then when ready, reheat it over medium-low heat until warmed through.
Delicious Grinch Cocoa Variations
- Color: If you want a more intense green color, just keep adding a few drops of green food coloring at a time until you get the perfect Grinch color. Another great way to add more color is to use bright green candy melts with the food coloring instead of white chocolate chips or white candy melts.
- Whipped Cream: Instead of store-bought whipped topping you can add a tangy topping adding some of this Stabilized Whipped Cream. It’s super easy to make using heavy whipping cream, cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract. If you’re not a fan of whipped cream, you could also top each hot beverage with mini marshmallows and then add the sprinkles.
- Sprinkles: If you can’t find the cute little red heart sprinkles you could just red confetti sprinkles, red hot candy or you can even drape candy canes over the side of the mug to give it the pop of red color it needs.
- Milk: If you need a dairy-free option, you can use almond milk or soy milk.
- Chocolate: If you have milk chocolate fans in your family all is not loss. You can still make this recipe using milk chocolate chips. The cocoa will be brown, so to give it a Grinch face makeover, add a little bit of green food coloring to the whipped cream topping. Then add the heart sprinkles.
- Rim the Mugs: To add even more color you can rim the mugs of cocoa. Add some bright red sanding sugar to a small plate. Before filling up the mug, dip the rim in a little bit of water, milk or corn syrup and roll it in the sugar. Give it a gentle shake to allow the excess sugar falls off. Then just fill and mugs with hot cocoa and enjoy.
Can I Make Grinch White Hot Chocolate the Slow Cooker?
If you are planning a party for Christmas or Christmas Eve and will be serving a crowd, you may prefer making this in a larger amount right in the crockpot.
Follow the same instructions as the stove top method. Just keep an eye on it until the chocolate has melted and incorporated with the milk. Once the cocoa is nice and warm, turn it down on low until ready to serve.
Can I Make this Boozy Hot Chocolate?
You bet! Add a little boozy kick to this tasty hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps! You could also use a little Bailey’s Irish Cream.
You’ll also love our Christmas tea that’s perfect for a cold night or for Christmas morning.
