- Place candy melts together in a double boiler or a heat proof bowl over a pot of water and melt over medium heat until completely smooth. Add in shortening a tsp at a time if necessary to reach a smooth consistency. Place the melted chocolate in a piping bag or frosting bag and snip off the end.
- Drizzle melted chocolate over each cereal treat one at a time. Place a red heart sprinkle in the middle bottom of each rice krispie treat while the chocolate is still soft. Repeat until all cereal treats are covered with chocolate, allow to cool.
Tip: You can also melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on 50% power in 30 second intervals until nice and smooth.
Variations for Grinch Homemade Rice Krispie Treats
- Green rice krispies treats: Add green food coloring to the marshmallow mixture to make the treats green. You can then drizzle white chocolate over the tops and finish them off with one of the red hearts.
- Festive toppings: You don’t have to stop with Grinch’s small heart! You can add additional Christmas colored sprinkles, crushed candy canes even mini-M&M’s if you prefer.
- Change the shape: For a fun twist, you can make the treats in the shape of the Grinch’s heart by using a large heart shaped cookie cutter. Make sure you pray it with some cooking spray. Another fun shape is to roll them into balls. Just spritz hands with a little cooking spray so the mixture doesn’t stick.
- Try different flavors: One of the great things about these delicious treats is you can add all sorts of flavors to them with your favorite extracts. You can always use almond or vanilla extract or for a real festive flavor, you can use some peppermint extract.
- Chocolate chips: For all the chocolate lovers in your life, you can make them extra happy by adding about a cup of mini chocolate chips to the rice krispies mixture before spreading it into the pan.
- Change up the cereal: We used regular rice krispies for this recipe, but you can use cocoa puffs or even strawberry rice krispies or cinnamon sugar rice krispies.
- Grinch Pops: Kids just love any food that’s on stick! For rice krispie pops, allow the mixture to cool for just a few minutes or until it begins to firm up. Spritz your hand with cooking spray or butter them and form into about 2-3-inch balls. Insert a lollipop stick into each ball and them dip them into the melted green chocolate. Place Grinch’s small heart sprinkle in the center of the side of each dipped rice krispie balls.
Helpful Tips for Storing Rice Crispy Treats
These fun treats can be stored at room temperature, right in your kitchen counter. Make sure they are kept an airtight container so that they’ll stay fresh longer.
You can also freeze these Grinch treats for up to a couple of months. For best results, wrap them individually with plastic wrap and slip them down into a freezer bag
Can I Just Use Premade Rice Krispie Treats?
This pains me to say but yes you CAN use store bought rice krispies treats. But the homemade ones are SO much better. It’s such a fail-proof recipe that only takes minutes to prepare and it truly worth the extra little bit of effort to make them from scratch.
