You’re going to love the flavor and crunch of this easy Christmas Crack Recipe. With a top layer of sweet chocolate and a base of crunchy goodness, this toffee candy is going to be addictive! With 5 simple ingredients, it’s simple to make.
I’ve been making this salty sweet concoction for years now and it’s always a hit. It’s also called saltine cracker toffee because of the layer of buttery sugar that’s spread on top of the salty crackers. It’s then topped with melted chocolate, just like toffee. It’s the perfect combination.

Christmas Crack Recipe
What I love about this simple saltine cracker recipe is that it’s made with easy ingredients that you probably have in your pantry. The crackers add a firm base and saltiness that pairs perfectly with the top layer of chocolate.
It’s even better that this dessert is a grab-and-go recipe as well. This saves me time on not having to clean a ton of dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40)
- 1 cup salted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Red and green sprinkles
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400
- Line baking sheet with sides or jelly roll pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil (or our favorite, a silpat liner). Spray parchment or aluminum with cooking spray.
- Line parchment with a single layer of saltine crackers, sides touching, to cover entire bottom of baking sheet. You might need to break a few to get them to fill the spaces.
- In a medium-sized sauce pan, you’ll melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat until bubbly. Stir with a whisk and let boil on medium for 3 minutes.
- Pour the caramel mixture directly onto the saltine crackers in the baking sheet. Spread the mixture over the top of all the crackers with a spatula or the back of a spoon.
- Bake for 5 minutes.
- Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the top of the crackers. Let sit for a 1 minute for the chocolate chips to start melting. Take a spatula or the back of a spoon and spread the melted chocolate over the toffee layer.
- Immediately sprinkle with colorful holiday sprinkles on top of the chocolate layer and allow to cool.
- Once cool, break them into pieces.
- Store in an air tight container.
Suggestions and Alternatives
- Add nuts – I’m a big fan of adding nuts to the toppings of my desserts. Crushed up peanuts would be yummy as well.
- Drizzle with caramel – When I look at this recipe, I think drizzling on melted caramel on top would be killer good!
- white chocolate – you can use white chocolate chips instead of milk or dark chocolate for a pretty toffee. The color of the sprinkles will pop on the white chocolate.
- coconut flakes – add some coconut flakes to the top of the chocolate before it sets
This saltine toffee recipe isn’t hard to do. Just make sure that you let it cool completely before breaking it. When it’s cooled down, you’ll see that it will provide a clean break into bigger pieces.
Why is it Called “Christmas Crack?”
It’s actually for a few reasons. The first is that it’s addictive; once you take a bite, you’re going to be hooked. The second reason is that the base is made of crackers; hence the shortened version of that word adding to the name.
No matter, this Christmas crack candy recipe is popular.
Can You Use Other Types of Crackers for this Recipe?
You can. A lot of people make Christmas Crack with Ritz crackers as well. It’s another great option because it still gives that salty flavor mixed with the sweet but also a bit of extra butter flavor, too.
Another base cracker that I’ve seen used are graham crackers. This gives an entirely different flavor. Cinnamon graham crackers are also great.
You should try to make both batches to see what you like best. They’ll both get eaten, so don’t worry about having too much!
Can you Freeze this Holiday Crack Recipe?
Absolutely. This will actually freeze really well. I like to freeze it in smaller servings so I can thaw out just a little bit and enjoy it, saving the rest for another time later in the future.
Just add the broken pieces to a freezer-safe container or bag and keep out the air.
How Do You Store Christmas Crack?
Just keep the pieces stored in an airtight container. It doesn’t have to be kept in the fridge, so counter at room temperature is fine.
Once you make this Christmas cracker candy, it’s sure to will become a holiday favorite. You’ll want to make a double batch because it’s great for gift giving.
