Chocolate cherry dump cake is a huge hit in our house. Not only does it taste amazing, but it’s so easy to make — you just dump and bake! It’s a chocolate cake base with rich cherry filling mixed together to create a rich chocolate dessert that’s perfect with ice cream or whipped cream!
This is a chocolate version of our favorite blueberry dump cake that everyone loves.
Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake
Dump cakes used to intimidate me. Not because they looked hard to make, but because I didn’t believe they could taste good. Oh how I was wrong! These are a super easy dessert the family loves!
I make sure to always have ingredients on hand to make one of my dump cake recipes. It’s a fast and easy dessert when you don’t have a ton of time.
The first time I made this dump cake recipe my kids (and husband!) were very skeptical. They thought I was making a dessert that they weren’t going to like at all. They let me continue and ended up loving it!
Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake Ingredients
Our chocolate cherry dump cake only has three ingredients. Yes, only three. There are other recipes that add a few more ingredients, but you really only need these three for a perfect chocolate dump
chocolate cake mix – any kind of chocolate cake mix will work here. Just get one that you like.
cherry pie filling – you’ll need two large cans of pie filling.
butter – I like unsalted butter for this recipe.
How to Make a Dump Cake
Start with a greased 9 x 13 pan. Dump the cherry pie filling cans into the bottom of the pan. Spread out to fill the bottom layer.
Dump the chocolate cake mix on top of the cherry pie filling.
Melt the butter and pour on top of the chocolate cake mix.
This cake is so easy to make, it’s really not even a recipe. You just dump and bake. I’m sure it was invented by a busy mom.
What Do You Serve with Dump Cake?
This cake is screaming for a scoop of vanilla ice cream. You can also add some whipped cream and put it on while it’s hot like a cobbler. Let the ice cream or the whipped cream melt a little into all the cracks and crevices of the warm dump cake.

Dark chocolate layer cake with mocha frosting
- 2 20 ounce cans cherry pie filling
- 1 18.5 ounce box chocolate cake mix
- 3/4 cup butter unsalted, melted
- Preheat oven to 350°
- Dump cherry pie filling into a 9x13 inch cake pan. Spread out onto bottom of pan.
- Pour cake mix on top of cherry pie filling.
- Melt butter in microwave and pour on top of the chocolate cake mix.
- Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
