If you’re not familiar with pudding shots, allow me to introduce your new favorite party treat. Similar to a Jello shot, pudding shots combine a mini dessert serving with the alcohol of your choice, making it a favorite at parties. These black and white pudding shots are a particularly fun version, with their bold black and white layers that are perfect for your Halloween theme. Try this festive recipe in place of the usual Jello shots this year and they’ll be the star of your party.

🥄 How to Make Halloween Black and White Pudding Shots
Step One: Make the Pudding
- Add the pudding mix and the half and half to a medium mixing bowl and whisk until thickened.
- Add the vodka to the pudding and whisk until fully combined and thickened again. Note: If needed, you can use a hand mixer for quicker results.
- Add the whipped cream and whisk until well combined.
Step Two: Add the Color
- Put half the pudding in a separate bowl.
- Add the black food dye to half of the pudding and stir until the desired color is reached and there are no streaks.
Step Three: Assemble
- Using a spoon or a frosting bag with a small tip, fill each shot glass about ¼ of the way with the white pudding.
- Add a layer of black pudding on top to fill the glass another ¼ of the way.
- Put another layer of white and a final layer of black pudding to complete the shot.
- Refrigerate the shots for about an hour.
- Just before serving, top each shot with a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with the black sprinkles. Serve and enjoy!
Tips and Suggestions
- Be careful not to add too much vodka or the pudding may be too thin, and your layers may start to blend. I recommend using no more than half a cup of alcohol per box of pudding.
- If you would like to counteract the slightly yellowish tint of the white pudding, add just the tiniest bit (barely a full drop) of purple food dye.
- If your black pudding looks like it has a dark purple tint, you can add a bit of yellow food dye to give it more of a true black color. Refrigerating the pudding will make it a little darker as well.
Variations
- Flavored vodka – Use a flavored variety of vodka, such as whipped cream, vanilla, or berry.
- Kid-friendly – Make a kid-friendly version of this treat by replacing the vodka with a cup of milk. These would be cute for a black and white themed party, or a Zebra party.
- Different flavors – You can use a different variety of white pudding if you prefer it over the cheesecake flavor. Both vanilla and white chocolate pudding will work.
- Change colors – Add some orange, green, and purple sprinkles for a more colorful Halloween look.
Questions
I wouldn’t recommend making these more than a couple of hours in advance. If left to sit for too long, the black pudding will bleed into the white, so they won’t look as good – although they will still taste great!
Cover them with lids or plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container. If properly covered, they should last up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
Yes, replace the vodka with one cup of milk.
