How to Make Turkey Nutter Butter Cookies

Step One: Melt the Red Chocolate

A bowl of peanut butter cookies, candy cornes, and red candy melts.
  • In a small microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt the red candy melts in the microwave.  Melt in 30-second intervals at 50% power. Stir between each interval. This will take 4-5 minutes.

Step Two: Add the Feathers

  • For the turkey feathers, put the melted candy melts in a piping bag and use the candy melts to attach 9 pieces of candy corn to the outside edge of one side of the peanut butter cookie. You want the narrow end of the candy corn to be facing inward so that the end of the tail feathers is the yellow part of the candy.
  • Allow to set for 3 minutes.

Step Three: Add the Eyes

  • Flip the cookie over and use the melted chocolate, attach two mini candy eyes.

Step Four: Create the Wattle and Beak

  • Use the red melted candy to create a little “wattle” leading from the eyes and immediately press 2 orange round sprinkles to create a little beak. Allow the face to set for 3 minutes.

Step Four: Make the Base and Allow Them to Dry

  • Place a dollop of the red melted candy at the base of the cookie and press one of the yellow candy melts into it to create a base. This allows the cute little turkey cookies to stand upright.
  • Place on a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper and allow to set for 5 minutes and serve immediately.\

Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies Variations

  • Cookies: Nutter Butters give the cute little turkeys a unique shape, but you can also use other cookies to make the face. Another choice is to use white chocolate-dipped regular Oreos or use golden Oreos. You just want a sturdy sandwich cookie that will hold up to the candy decorations.
  • Wattle: Instead of red melted chocolate you can use small pieces of rolled-up red candy leather or red licorice adhered with a little melted chocolate.
  • Eyes: You can substitute the candy eyes with black icing dots, or mini chocolate chips, or draw them on with black gel icing.
  • Turkey beak: Instead of orange candy sprinkles, you can use a small dot of orange icing or melted candy melts to make the beak.
  • For the base: To make transporting easier, you don’t have to create a base if you had rather the cookies lay flat. If you do want to make the base, you can also use mini pretzel rounds instead of the red chocolate wafers.

What Is a Nutter Butter?

Nutter Butter cookies are a popular cookie brand that are made with two peanut-shaped crunchy cookies with a sweet and creamy peanut butter filling.

How Do I Store These Cookies?

You can easily store these cookies in a plastic bag or an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-5 days.

Can I freeze Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies?

While it’s possible to freeze Nutter Butter Turkey cookies, their texture and design could be affected. Luckily, they’re a fun treat you can whip up in under 30 minutes.

Why Do My Candy Melts Seize in the Microwave?

The number one reason is if even a small amount of moisture or liquid comes into contact with the candy melts, it can cause them to seize.  The other main reason is that they are melted at too high of a temp. It’s important to follow the instructions on the packaging and heat them in short intervals, stirring in between, to prevent scortching or seizing.
