Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Rice Krispies

- Vanilla extract
- Miniature marshmallows, divided
- Hot chocolate mix
- Rice Krispies cereal
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
How to Make Hot Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats
Step One: Make the Marshmallow Mixture
- Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat and spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- Once the butter is melted, add 4 cups of marshmallows and the vanilla extract. Stir the mixture until the marshmallows are completely melted and smooth.
- Add the hot chocolate and mix until it’s fully incorporated into the marshmallow mixture.
Step Two: Add the Cereal and Form the Treats
- Using a large silicone spatula, gently fold in the cereal, chocolate chips, and remaining marshmallows until the cereal is evenly coated.
- Spread the cereal mixture in the prepared pan and gently press it down until it’s even. Let it cool at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Cut the chocolate rice krispie squares and serve
Tips and Suggestions
- Use wax paper – Put a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper over the treats as you’re pressing them into the pan. This will prevent them from sticking to your hands.
- Chill – To cool the treats more quickly, you can chill them in the fridge for about 20 minutes.
- Reheat – These treats are great at room temperature, cold, or warmed in the microwave for about 15 seconds. If you like them soft and gooey, I recommend reheating them right before serving.
- Use a spatula – A silicone spatula will help you transfer the Rice Krispie mixture to the baking sheet easily and smooth out the top into a nice, even layer.
- Fresh marshmallows – make sure your marshmallows are fresh. Stale marshmallows don’t melt properly.
Variations
- Hot chocolate varieties – You can use any kind of hot chocolate mix you prefer. We used 3 packets of milk chocolate mix, but dark chocolate is great also.
- Flavored chip varieties – Try some white chocolate or peanut butter chips in place of the chocolate chips.
- More chocolate – For even more chocolatey flavor, you can use Cocoa Krispies cereal instead of regular Rice Krispies or drizzle the finished treats with melted chocolate.
- Mini chocolate chips – add a handful of mini chocolate chips after the treats are made, but before you press them into the pan. This will keep them mostly whole.
- Chocolate drizzle – melt some chocolate chips and drizzle over the rice krispies treat squares.
How Do I Store Hot Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats?
You can store your leftover treats in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap. They can be stored in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 5 days.
What Brand of Hot Chocolate Should I Use?
Some of my favorites include Godiva brand and Trader Joe’s Sipping Chocolate, but you can use any kind you like!
These are going to be a huge hit and will probably become one of your new family favorites.
