Hot chocolate bombs are a trendy way to serve hot chocolate. Small chocolate shells, aka bombs, are filled with hot chocolate, mini marshmallows, sprinkles, and other goodies that melt open when you pour hot water on them – making the perfect cup of hot chocolate!
An easier way to make hot chocolate, although not as fun, but just as tasty is our crockpot hot chocolate recipe.

What Is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are round chocolate shells filled with hot chocolate, marshmallows, and other festive treats like crushed peppermint and molded together with chocolate to form a bomb.
When placed in a cup with some hot water, the hot chocolate bombs melt, revealing the hot cocoa mixture and other treats on the inside. Stir and watch the bomb melt into the hot liquid, creating the perfect cup of hot chocolate.

How to Make a Hot Chocolate Bomb
Prepare your materials so you can work quickly.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. If using the microwave, set on 30-second intervals. Stir in between each interval.
Pour about two tablespoons melted chocolate into each sphere. Using the back of a spoon spread the chocolate around the sides until it’s completely covered.
Using a bench scraper or knife, scrape across the top of the molds, removing any excess chocolate.
Place in refrigerator to harden. Remove and add more chocolate, filling any holes.
Repeat until you have thick spheres.
Once hard, remove from mold. Place back in the refrigerator to cool for a few minutes. The heat from your hands will soften the edges.
Prepare the ingredients to go inside the spheres.
Place plate in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Remove chilled spheres and full one sphere at a time.
Fill sphere and set on counter. Get top of sphere and place rim down on the hot plate. Place on top of filled sphere and gently press together. Set hot chocolate bomb on a chilled plate and set back in refrigerator.
Repeat until all spheres are filled.
The final step is to decorate your chocolate bombs. There are so many ways to do this, but one simple and elegant way is to melt more chocolate and place in a zip top bag. Let chocolate cool a bit before place in bag. Cut a small hole in the corner and use it as a piping bag to drizzle chocolate on the top of the chocolate bomb using a back and forth motion.
We used white chocolate, but you could also use milk or dark chocolate.
Add any sprinkles or decorations immediately after chocolate is drizzled, before the chocolate has a chance to set.
We added edible gold stars to the top of our hot chocolate bombs.
What Kind of Chocolate Should I Use?
You can use regular chocolate chips, or a melting chocolate like candy melts. We used regular chocolate chips for this batch.
If I’m honest, melting chocolates, like candy melts, work wonders and are super easy to use. Plus, melting chocolates come in a ton of colors so you could have red, green, blue, white, or any color you want for the outside of your chocolate bombs.
(Here’s a bundle of red and green candy melts on Amazon. You can get melting chocolates at most any craft store, Walmart, or online.
Silicone Mold
You’ll need a silicone mold to make these chocolate bombs. This mold is the one I used. They are very hard to find in stores so I’d order early.
Tips
- Practice. Make a few of the candy shells and learn how to put them remove them from the silicone mold and “glue” them together. Buy extra chocolate.
- Reinforce the shells. Before removing the chocolate shells, see if they need any reinforcing. If you see a crack, just add more melted chocolate to it and let it set up before attempting to remove it from the mold.
- Do not overcook the chocolate. Chocolate chips melt, but keep their shape until stirred. If you overcook, the chocolate will become chakly when stirred. At this point you need to start over with a new batch of chocolate.
- Work in a cool kitchen. The chocolate shells get warm from the air, and from the touch of your hands. It’s best to wear rubber gloves when handling the shells.
- Chill in refrigerator. Immediately after removing the shells from their mold, place them on a plate and put them in the refrigerator to chill again. This allows them to be cold when you handle them.
- Thick edges. Make sure you have enough chocolate on the top of each sphere. If these are too thin, you won’t be able to seal them together.
- Work quickly. While they are in the refrigerator chilling, prepare the ingredients for the inside so you can work quickly.
How to Use a Chocolate Bomb
This is the fun part! When you’re ready to use your chocolate bomb, place it in the bottom of a good-sized mug. Pour 1 cup, 8 oz., of hot milk or water on top and stir.
The hot liquid will start to melt the chocolate shell, exposing the ingredients inside. Stir until all is melted. Add additional marshmallows if desired and serve.
Storing Hot Chocolate Bombs
Since these bombs are fragile and risk melting, it’s best to keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.
