Don’t be fooled by the sugar-cookie-like appearance of these Halloween Ooey Gooey Cookies. They have a much softer and chewier texture than a sugar cookie and a sweet buttery flavor that’s as rich and decadent as a butter cookie. They can also be decorated with all kinds of different candy and sprinkles, but we love the fun combination of orange and black, or green, orange, and purple for Halloween.

Despite their gourmet taste, these treats are super easy to make, as they use boxed cake mix and just a few additional ingredients to make the cookie batter. Make a batch of these delicious cookies for your next Halloween party and I can guarantee you that they won’t last long!

Tips and Suggestions

  • It may be tempting to eat these right out of the oven, but you’ll want to give them adequate time to cool before serving – otherwise the cookies may not hold their shape.
  • Use a cookie scoop to ensure that you get the same amount of dough for each cookie and that they are all uniform in size.
  • Don’t skip chilling the dough – if your dough isn’t chilled properly, your cookies may flatten too much while baking.
  • You can sift some extra powdered sugar on top of the cookies right after you remove them from the oven.

  • Change the flavor of cake mix to make different varieties of these cookies. strawberry, red velvet, chocolate, and lemon cake mix would all be delicious.
  • Change the colors of sprinkles for different holidays – you can use pastel for Easter, red and green for Christmas, or red, pink, and white for Valentine’s Day.
  • Skip the sprinkles and use mini chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar, or mini M&Ms instead.
  • Put some frosting between two cookies to create an ooey gooey cookie sandwich.
