These Halloween ooey gooey cookies are a festive fall version of the delicious and popular ooey gooey butter cookies. And if you’ve never had ooey gooey butter cookies before, you’re in for a treat. With their soft, chewy, melt-in-your-mouth texture and their rich buttery taste, these treats are deliciously addictive.
Topped with colorful Halloween sprinkles, they’re the perfect crowd-pleasing addition to your Halloween party.
Don’t be fooled by the sugar-cookie-like appearance of these Halloween Ooey Gooey Cookies. They have a much softer and chewier texture than a sugar cookie and a sweet buttery flavor that’s as rich and decadent as a butter cookie. They can also be decorated with all kinds of different candy and sprinkles, but we love the fun combination of orange and black, or green, orange, and purple for Halloween.
Despite their gourmet taste, these treats are super easy to make, as they use boxed cake mix and just a few additional ingredients to make the cookie batter. Make a batch of these delicious cookies for your next Halloween party and I can guarantee you that they won’t last long!

⏲ How to Make Halloween Ooey Gooey Cookies
Step One: Make the Cookie Dough
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Line an ungreased cookie sheet with a silpat liner or parchment paper and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, egg, cream cheese, and vanilla until fluffy and mixed well.
- Add the cake mix to the butter mixture and stir until combined. Stir in ¼ cup of the sprinkles.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill the cookie dough for 30-40 minutes.
Step Two: Bake and Decorate
- Remove the cookie batter from the refrigerator and roll into 1-inch balls.
- Roll each cookie ball in the sprinkles, then in the confectioner’s sugar, until the entire ball is coated.
- Place the cookie balls on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for 2 minutes on the cookie sheet, then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Tips and Suggestions
- It may be tempting to eat these right out of the oven, but you’ll want to give them adequate time to cool before serving – otherwise the cookies may not hold their shape.
- Use a cookie scoop to ensure that you get the same amount of dough for each cookie and that they are all uniform in size.
- Don’t skip chilling the dough – if your dough isn’t chilled properly, your cookies may flatten too much while baking.
- You can sift some extra powdered sugar on top of the cookies right after you remove them from the oven.
Variations
- Change the flavor of cake mix to make different varieties of these cookies. strawberry, red velvet, chocolate, and lemon cake mix would all be delicious.
- Change the colors of sprinkles for different holidays – you can use pastel for Easter, red and green for Christmas, or red, pink, and white for Valentine’s Day.
- Skip the sprinkles and use mini chocolate chips, cinnamon sugar, or mini M&Ms instead.
- Put some frosting between two cookies to create an ooey gooey cookie sandwich.
Store them in an airtight container and they should stay fresh for up to a week.
Yes, place them in a freezer bag and they’ll freeze well for up to a couple of months. You may even want to bake a double batch and save one for later.
