How To Make This Easy Dirt Cups Pudding Recipe

Oreo cookies in food processor, crushed Oreos, chocolate pudding in mixing bowl, added Cool Whip to pudding.
  • In a large mixing bowl combine milk and pudding mixes. It is best to use an electric mixer because this mixture is very thick. Place bowl in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile place Oreos in the food processor and finely chop to get cookie crumbs. If you don’t have a food processor you can place them in a large plastic resealable bag and crush with a rolling pin or mallet.
  • Remove the pudding mixture from the refrigerator and mix in whipped topping.

  • Place about ½ an inch of crushed Oreo at the bottom of each cup. Spoon layer of pudding evenly into each cup and top with a thick layer of Oreo crumbs. Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
  • Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a microwave safe bowl or double boiler. Place in a piping bag and cut a small hole in the tip. Use the chocolate to decorate Milano cookies like gravestones or ghosts.
  • Remove the pudding cups from the refrigerator and press the bottom half of a Milano cookie into each cup to form the cookie tombstone. Decorate with gummy worms and sprinkles to create a mini “graveyard”
  • Serve immediately.

This recipe can be made with sugar-free pudding and cool whip for a lighter version as well! Smaller cups can be used to create smaller pudding cups.

Special Tools

Since the mixture becomes quite thick when you’re making it, you’ll want to have an electric mixer to make it easier. A food processor is also great for breaking up the Oreo cookies.

Alternatives

  • Vanilla Pudding – It might not look like dirt but if the kids don’t care for chocolate pudding, change up the type of pudding and use that instead!
  • Crushed Cookies – Oreos are super popular but really any type of dark colored cookie will work just fine.
  • Candy Pumpkins – make these cute with little candy pumpkins on top
  • Snack Pack – you can buy premade pudding “snack packs” and decorate the tops instead of making your own pudding
  • Candy Bones – you can get these sprinkles at craft stores on on Amazon and add them to the dirt cups

What are some other cookie options that could work to look like gravestones in these graveyard pudding cups?

The biggest thing to remember is that you just need flat cookies that are squared or rounded to give off that look.

Milano cookies are great but you can use nutter butter cookies, or even graham crackers as well. Don’t be worried about changing it up and use what you have in the house.

I think perhaps the amounts in recipe is incorrect. The size of pudding pkg isn’t listed but photo has the small 3.9oz box. Directions calls for 3 cups of milk but pudding directions only call for 1 cup per box. The pudding was like thick chocolate milk. I even put in freezer & it never got pudding texture. It really stinks considering I never buy this type stuff & the kids were extremely upset that their pudding cups didn’t turn out edible.
