Slow Cooker Cube Steak

Why spend more time in the kitchen when you really don’t have to? If you’re a fan of using your crockpot to help with meal planning, this easy recipe to make a hearty home-style dinner in no time.

Take the time to load up your slow cooker with these easy ingredients and then let it take over and do the work. It’s the perfect no fuss weeknight dinner recipe and is a wonderfully flavorful meal.

I got this recipe from a dear friend when I was talking to her one day on the phone. She was in her kitchen cooking the tender cube steaks and I asked her what she was making. She told me how she was making this to put in the crockpot to have for dinner with her boys. It’s the best comfort food and she uses this recipe to feed her family on busy weeknights nights when they have ball games or other activities and she doesn’t have time after work to make a big meal.

It was hooked and couldn’t wait to make it myself. It’s such an easy weeknight meal and has become our favorite easy slow cooker recipe.

Crockpot Recipe for Cubed Steak

Sometimes I find a great price on meat and wonder how to cook with it and use it. Up until recently, cube steak was always one of those finds.

While it’s labeled “steak,” it’s not really the type of steak dinner that I’m used to eating so I knew that there had to be other options for using this cut of meat.

I love this easy cube steak recipe because you can make this in the morning in just a few minutes. And, it tastes great. Just add a simple side and you have a complete meal with an amazing, rich gravy without the effort. No need for a separate gravy recipe because this makes the perfect gravy every time.

Ingredients

ingredients: cube steaks, salt and pepper shakers, flour, melted butter, two opened cans of mushroom soup, water on white counter

As you can see, you hardly need any ingredients at all to whip up this simple crockpot recipe.

  • 1 package cube steaks (4-6 steaks)
  • 2-4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • ½ All-purpose flour
  • 2 cans (10.75 oz. each) cream of mushroom soup
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix (French Onion soup)
  • garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

cube steak, then dredge cube steak in flour, put in crock pot, and cube steak in crock pot covered with mushroom soup
  • Spray the inside of your crockpot.

  • In large skillet heat oil on medium-low heat.
  • Place flour in mixing bowl and add salt and pepper. Mix to combine. Place flour on a large plate and dredge cube steaks in flour to season steaks.
  • One at a time, place cube steak in oil for about 1-2 minutes per side until lightly brown. Don’t cook through.
  • Place cube steaks in the bottom of a slow cooker, on top of mushroom soup mixture.
  • Pour remaining soup on top of steaks.
  • Turn crockpot on low and let cook for 4-6 hours.

Tips and Suggestions

The longer the cubed steaks are in the crock pot, the more tender they will become. They are so tender, they fall apart easily. Don’t worry if this happens, just serve the steak pieces with the gravy as you would if they remained whole.

Some people like the the cube steaks to become smaller pieces. If you like them to remain whole, be sure to cook them for the less amount of time and remove them.

Substitutes and Additions

Even though I love the recipe just the way that it is, you can always play with the ingredients and try out a few new tastes, too.

  • add vegetables – If you want to add in some veggies, you can do that, too. Putting a bag of frozen veggies in with the rest of the ingredients can be a fast and simple solution.
  • black pepper – be generous with the pepper. This can be added later, but we love it with pepper
  • onion – chop a medium onion and place in the crockpot
  • fresh mushrooms – add sliced mushrooms near the end of cooking
  • more seasonings – depending on how you like your meat seasoned, you could easily add any of your favorite seasonings
  • cream cheese – if you like your gravy extra creamy, you can add 1/2 block of cream cheese or sour cream to the mixture. Stir it in before serving so it combines.
  • Cream of celery soup – if you don’t like mushrooms you can substitute the mushroom soup with cream of celery or cream of chicken soup
  • beef broth – substitute beef broth for water if you want a richer flavor

What is Cube Steak?

Cube steak if top sirloin or top round steak that’s been tenderized and reshaped into flat “patties.” This process is called cubing.

Why is My Cube Steak Tough?

Due to the cut of meat, there is a good chance that you might notice that the meat is a bit tougher.

Cooking it in the slow cooker will help with that as it’s a slower cooking process, but you can also use a meat tenderizer or meat mallet to pound it out to make it a bit thinner before cooking.

Is Cube Steak the Same as Salisbury steak?

It’s not the same, but they’re very similar. People will associate it as the same since it’s going to have a gravy but it is a completely different taste and coloring.

Do you Rinse Cube Steak Before Cooking It?

No, don’t rinse the cube steak before cooking. Just as a regular steak, remove it from its packaging and cook.

Can I Double This Recipe?

It’s tempting to make a big batch of this crock pot cubed steak, but I would make it as it is written first. While you can simply double the recipe, I would only do that if you have a large crockpot where the meat can be spread out a bit.

What are Great Side Dish Options for Cube Steak in the Crockpot?

We love side dish options in our house as they really help to round out this meal. Some of our favorite side dishes are:

  • mashed potatoes
  • white rice
  • egg noodles
  • Italian green beans

This is such an easy crockpot recipe the whole family loves.

Set up an Instant Pot along side your crockpot and make these amazing mashed potatoes and your entire meal will be done in no time!

This was the best recipe ever. It was so easy to make. This is my second time that I made it but this time I had to do my own onion soup mix since I didn’t have any on hand. But it turned out the same. It had such a good taste and it’s a comforting meal.

  2. Can do this in the oven instead of a crock pot?

  3. You can make cube steak in the oven, but the texture turns out a little different. The slow cooker keeps it really tender and gives the gravy time to thicken. If you want to bake it, cover the dish tightly and cook low and slow until the meat is fork‑tender.
