Why Our Magic Bars are the Best

  • Easy to make – No complicated steps here. You just layer, bake, and enjoy all that gooey deliciousness.
  • Delicious flavors – The combo of sweetened condensed milk, chocolate, and coconut is simply irresistible.
  • Festive twist – With a simple color swap to M&Ms, these bars go from an everyday treat to a festive holiday dessert.

Ingredients

Ingredients on a marble surface: shredded coconut, crushed graham crackers, white and milk chocolate chips, red and green candies, stick of butter, and a can of condensed milk.
  • Graham cracker crumbs – you can buy them already crushed or make your own graham cracker crumbs in the food processor.
  • Butter, melted – This binds the crust together and gives it a rich, buttery base that holds up perfectly under all those delicious layers.
  • Sweetened condensed milk – The secret to that gooey texture and rich sweetness that pulls all the flavors together in each bite.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips – These add just the right amount of chocolatey richness without making it overly sweet.
  • Flaked coconut – Adds a bit of chewiness that really complements the chocolate and condensed milk.
  • White chocolate chips – Creamy and sweet, they balance the semi-sweet chocolate chips and add a nice bit of contrast.
  • Red and green chocolate candies – Adds a festive touch.

Step One: Make the Crust

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Line a 9 x 9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Combine graham cracker crumbs and melted butter in a bowl until well mix.
  • Pour the graham cracker mixture into the prepared baking dish and press onto the bottom of the pan, using the bottom of a measuring cup.

Step Two: Add the Milk

  • Immediately top with the red and green candies and white chocolate chips.
  • Cool your chewy bars completely, then, using a sharp knife cut them into 16 small bars.

Suggestions and Alternatives

  • Crust – You can use regular honey graham crackers, cinnamon graham crackers, or chocolate graham crackers for your crust. You can also use vanilla wafers or shortbread cookies to make the crust.
  • Nuts – Add a little extra crunch with chopped macadamia nuts, walnuts or pecans.
  • Chocolate chips – We used white and semi-sweet chips. but you can use other flavors. Peanut butter chips, dark chocolate chips, and milk chocolate chips are all great choices.
  • Other mix-ins – Feel free to add other treats to your bars. Try adding extra chocolate chips or mix in fun add-ins like mini marshmallows, dried fruit, pretzels or toffee bits.
  • Toppings – For even more color, you can add festive sprinkles to the top layer after it cools.

How Do You Store Leftovers

Keep any leftover magic bars in an airtight container so they stay fresh and don’t dry out. You don’t need to refrigerate them, but they tend to hold their shape a bit better when chilled compared to storing them at room temperature.

If you’re stacking them in a container, slip a piece of parchment paper between the layers to keep them from sticking together.

For longer storage, these bars freeze well, too. Once they’re cooled and cut, place them on a parchment-lined pan in the freezer until they’re solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. They’ll stay tasty for up to 3 months!

Top Tips

  • Let the bars cool fully before cutting to keep them from falling apart. You can pop them in the fridge to cool faster if you’re in a hurry.
  • Don’t leave any of that sweetened condensed milk behind! Scrape the can well; those extra few tablespoons from the sides and bottom make these bars even better.
  • Keep an eye on your bars near the end of the baking time. Once the coconut starts to turn golden, they’re ready to come out.

FAQ’S

Do these magic bars have different names?

There are several great recipe variations with different names. Coconut dream bars, 7-Layer Bars, and Hello Dolly Bars are some common names you’ll see.

Why are my magic bars crumbly?

If the bars are falling apart, they may not have cooled completely. Let them cool fully before cutting, or chill them in the fridge to set. Also, ensure you pressed down firmly on the graham cracker crust layer when assembling to help hold everything together.

Do I use sweetened coconut flakes for this recipe?

You can use either sweetened or unsweetened shredded coconut. The sweetened condensed milk adds quite a bit of sweetness to the bars, so unsweetened coconut would work fine and provide chewy texture.

Why didn’t my bars set up properly?

If the bars are too gooey or underbaked, you can try chilling them in the fridge to firm them up. For next time, double-check your oven temperature and bake until the coconut just begins to brown for the best results.
