  • Easy recipe – This air fryer recipe is super easy to make, using just a handful of simple ingredients.

  • Perfect side dish – They make a great appetizer or something crispy to go with weeknight hot dogs, burgers or chicken strips.

Onion Ring Ingredients

Various ingredients for Air Fryer Onion Rings neatly arranged on a marble countertop, including onion slices, bread crumbs, flour, milk, eggs, and assorted spices in small bowls, prepared for cooking.
  • Yellow onion – You’ll want to slice it into ½ inch rings.
  • All-purpose flour – Creates a light coating that helps the egg and breadcrumb mixture stick to the onion rings.
  • Seasonings – For the best flavor use a combination of Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, salt, black pepper
  • Eggs – Used to help bind the flour and breadcrumbs to the onion rings, creating a crispy coating.
  • Milk – We used whole milk, but you can use evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed) if you have it on hand.
  • Italian-style panko breadcrumbs – These add a light, crispy texture and extra crunch to the onion rings.
  • Grated parmesan cheese – Mixes with the breadcrumbs to add a delicious, cheesy flavor to the coating.

How to Make Homemade Onion Rings in the Air Fryer

Step One: Prepare a Dipping Station

Three containers for Air Fryer Onion Rings are arranged vertically on a marble surface: the top with flour, the middle with beaten eggs in a glass bowl, and the bottom with breadcrumbs.
  • Separate your onion slices into individual rings. Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F for about 5 minutes.
  • Get three separate bowls. In the first bowl, mix the flour, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, beat the eggs and milk (make sure the bowl is deep enough so that the onions can be fully submerged).
  • In the third bowl make the panko mixture by combining the Panko bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. You can omit the Parmesan cheese if you’d like plain onion rings.

Step Two: Coat the Onion Rings

Three onion rings are coated in flour, placed in a rectangular white tray filled with flour on a marble surface. This is a process in preparing Air Fryer Onion Rings
  • Take an onion ring and coat it in the seasoned flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
Next step in preparing Air Fryer Onion Rings is to use a fork in dipping an onion ring in a bowl of beaten egg, with a container of flour on the left and breadcrumbs on the right, all on a marble surface.
  • Then dip it into the milk and egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
Next step in preparing Air Fryer Onion Rings is to coat the rings in a breadcrumb mixture.
  • Finally, coat it evenly with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere. Repeat with the remaining onion rings.

Step Three: Add The Rings to the Air Fryer

  • Lightly coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the coated onion rings in a double layer, it’s ok if they’re slightly overlapping. Spray the tops of the onion rings with a light coat of cooking spray.
  • Air fry the onion rings in batches, if necessary, for about 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time, until the panko crumbs turn golden brown and crispy. The actual cook time may vary a little so be sure to keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

  • Once done, transfer the crunchy onion rings to a serving plate and serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, or ketchup.

Storing Leftovers

  • Refrigerator – Without question, onion rings are best when freshly made. But if you have leftovers, you can store them in a airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat them in the air fryer or oven to maintain their crispiness.
  • Freezer – Onion rings do not freeze well because they lose their crispiness when thawed. It’s best to enjoy them fresh.

Top Tips for the Crispiest Onion Rings

  • Be careful when flipping the onion rings in the air fryer to ensure the coating doesn’t come off.
  • For uniform cooking, try to slice the onions into rings that are similar in thickness. Aim for about 1/2-inch thick slices.
  • Make sure to coat the onion rings evenly with flour, egg wash, and breadcrumbs to create a uniform coating and crispy texture.

Variations

  • Spicy onion rings – Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a teaspoon of hot sauce to the seasoning mix for a spicy kick.
  • Herbs – Add fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or oregano to the seasoning mix for added flavor.
  • Smoky onion rings – Incorporate a teaspoon of smoked paprika and a dash of Worcestershire sauce into the seasoning mix for a BBQ twist.
  • Ranch – Add a packet of ranch seasoning mix to the flour mixture for a ranch-flavored coating.
  • Other seasonings – Experiment with additional seasonings like onion powder, smoked paprika, or a dash of curry powder to customize the flavor to your liking.

Air Fryer Onion Ring Recipe FAQs

Can I save leftover onion rings?

It’s highly recommended to eat the onion rings while they’re fresh and hot, otherwise they will become cold and soggy. They will not taste as good if saved and reheated.

Can I use sweet onions instead of yellow onions?

Yes, you can use sweet onions or Vidalia onions for a milder flavor.

Can I make these onion rings ahead of time?

While onion rings are best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare the coated onion rings ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container until ready to air fry.
