Lucky Charms Muddy Buddies is a fun sweet treat for St. Patrick’s Day or any time you want a little, fun treat made with cereal, chocolate, powdered sugar, and peanut butter.
If you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day you can pair this treat with our green Shamrock Shake!
Lucky Charms Muddy Buddies
These muddy buddies are paired with Lucky Charms cereal and makes a fun rainbow treat. The kids love it, but so do the adults.
I made a big batch of these muddy buddies and brought them to a family gathering thinking the little kids would love them and I’d be the favorite Aunt, but the adults all took big scoops too!
Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow?
So, what’s the difference between muddy buddies and puppy chow? Nothing! It’s just different ways people call this chocolate coated cereal treat.
It’s such a quick dish to make.
It’s popular at Christmas and other holidays, but equally so at football parties and birthdays. It’s a quick, easy treat that feeds a crowd.

Ingredients
- Lucky Charms Cereal – without marshmallows
- Lucky Charms marshmallows – separated from the cereal
- Chex cereal
- white chocolate chips
- butter
- peanut butter
- vanilla
- powdered sugar
- green M&Ms
Instructions heading
Put the Chex and Lucky Charms cereals in a very large bowl and set aside. Use the biggest bowl you have.
In a microwave safe bowl microwave the white chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals (you’ll probably only need one minute.) Stir until the mixture is smooth and add vanilla.
Pour the chocolate peanut butter mixture on top of the cereal mixture and gently toss to coat all the cereal pieces. This may take a minute or two to get it spread out.
Add powdered sugar and toss to combine. You can also put the mixture in a large ziptop bag and gently shake until all the cereal is coated.
Add the Lucky Charms marshmallows, the M&Ms, and any other candy or sprinkles you want.
Substitutions/Additions
- Sprinkles – add green sprinkles of any kind. Even rainbow sprinkles would be great and colorful
- Candy pieces – add chopped candy pieces into this.
Tips
- Big bowl – this recipe makes a big batch of muddy buddies so use the biggest bowl you have!
- Add the marshmallows after the powdered sugar – this will allow the color from the marshmallows to stand out!
- Get creative – you really can’t mess this recipe up. Be creative and add other candies and sugary treats at the end.
- Green M&Ms – if you can’t find a bag of all green M&Ms, you may have to sort through a few bags and hand pick them out. I try to pick up extra M&M candies at the holidays just for this reason.
