Suggestions and Alternatives
- pie shield – watch the edges of the pie as it cooks. Use a pie shield (you can make one out of aluminum foil) to cover the edges of the crust so they don’t burn.
- baking sheet – place a cookie sheet on the bottom rack. In case the pie bubbles over, the pan will catch the excess. I like to do this will all apple pie recipes.
What Type of Apples Should I use?
- honey crisp apples – honey crisp are my personal favorite. They are right in the middle of sweet and tart
- granny smith apples – these are more on the tart side, but when you add the sugar and ingredients it will make a perfect apple pie
- pink lady – this is the closest to a granny smith apple. It’s less sweet.
What Do I Serve With This Dutch Apple Pie Recipe?
- whipped cream – If you’re not a big fan of chocolate ganache, you can top with whipped cream instead. It will still pair perfectly with the crumble topping and add another level of sweet flavor.
- vanilla ice cream – serve with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream.
How Do I Keep Sliced Apples from Turning Brown?
To prevent apples slices from turning brown, add the sliced apples in a bowl with one cup of water and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Cover all of the apple slices. Keep the apple slices in the bowl of lemon juice water for 3-5 minutes. Drain and rinse the apple slices.
Can I Use a Homemade Pie Crust?
Absolutely, you can certainly use your own pie crust. I just like to use a store-bought crust because it saves time during the busy holiday baking season. But if you have a favorite pie crust recipe, use that instead. A homemade flaky pie crust is always a good idea.
This delicious apple crumble pie is going to become a staple for you in the fall and at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a unique twist on a classic apple pie recipe and is a delicious apple pie.
