What is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped coffee, also called Dalgona coffee, is a coffee drink served over hot milk or iced milk. It started online on TikTok and gained traction on other social media platforms while people were under stay at home orders.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

steps to make whipped coffee

It’s really pretty simple to make whipped coffee. It’s just equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Whip it until it’s thick and put it on top of milk. That’s really how easy it is, but we have a few tips for you to make the perfect whipped coffee.

Here’s the official instruction on how to make whipped coffee:

  • Take 2 tablespoons of instant coffee (regular coffee will not work), 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 tablespoons hot water.
  • You can use the hot water from your tap, there is no need to heat water on the stove or in the microwave.
  • Using a stand or hand electric mixer, whip the ingredients together in a bowl. Mix until the mixture is thick.
  • Spoon mixture over a glass of hot or iced milk. Stir and enjoy.

Whipped Coffee Tips

I made it two different ways to show what happens in each instance. The first time I attempted to use an immersion blender. There simply wsn’t enough ingredients for the blender to grab and mix. If you double or tripled the recipe, it might work.

I switched to a regular whisk. It didn’t thicken as much as it should have. They say you need to hand-whisk for at least 20 minutes. I don’t know about you, but I’m not about to hand whisk anything for 20 minutes. I gave up after about 7 or 8 minutes.

The result of hand whisking was a perfectly flavorful cup of whipped coffee, but the “whip” wasn’t there. As you can see from the photos the whipped coffee was more of a thinner liquid state. That said, it was really easy to drink and had an amazing coffee flavor. The color is also darker.

The second time I made it, I used my Kitchen Aid stand mixer with whisk attachment. This worked beautifully. It created a thick and light whipped coffee topping that I added to milk. The color of the whipped coffee was a lot lighter the more it got whipped.

Thick or Thin Whip?

So, what’s the verdict? My husband liked the thicker whipped coffee, and I liked the thinner version.

Both versions tasted amazing so don’t not make this if you don’t have an electric mixer. It’s worth every drop and is a real at-home coffee treat. Just like going to a fancy coffee shop, but less expensive and takes less time!
