These chocolate covered frozen bananas are so popular in our house as a fun treat because while we already love bananas, we love finding new recipes to use them. We also love Banana Bread and Sheet Pan Banana Blueberry Pancakes for banana filled breakfasts too.

This recipe for chocolate bananas is very simple, which means it’s easy to include small kids in the process too. Made with just normal bananas, pop sticks, chocolate chips, and shortening, there are so many delicious ways of decorating them – just choose your toppings and get creative. We make them with the kids for a fun cooking activity, and let them decorate their own banana pops!

One of the best things about this recipe is how customizable it is. Use white, milk, or dark chocolate chips to coat the bananas, and use any remaining chocolate to drizzle on at the end. For toppings, you can use crushed nuts, granola, or coconut shavings for a healthier snack, or small candies, drizzled chocolate and sprinkles for an even sweeter treat.

  • Shortening

  • Toppings: Chopped Peanuts & Sprinkles

How Do You Make Frozen Chocolate Banana Popsicles?

Step One: Cut Bananas

  • Peel bananas and cut them in half.

Step Two: Place On Sticks And Freeze

  • Push a popsicle stick (we use these) into the cut end of each banana half, and place the halves on a large baking sheet covered in wax paper or parchment paper.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer for at least 3 hours. Once the bananas are frozen it is time to dip them in chocolate.

Step Three: Prepare Toppings and Melt Chocolate

  • Prepare your sprinkles and chopped nuts and place wax paper or parchment on the counter or a small baking sheet ready for the bananas to dip into them.
  • Melt the chocolate chips by placing them in a microwave-safe bowl or mason jar and microwaving them in 15-second increments and stirring in between. Alternatively, you can place a mason jar or glass bowl of chocolate chips with the shortening into a pan of water, so that the water line comes just above the chocolate line but not into the chocolate. Heat the pan over medium heat and stir the chocolate chips occasionally until melted and smooth and set to one side.

Step Four: Dip Banana Pops In Chocolate and Add Toppings

  • Remove the bananas from the freezer and dip them one at a time into the melted chocolate, allowing any excess chocolate drip off.
  • Immediately add your toppings: sprinkle with nuts and rainbow sprinkles. Place on wax paper on a large baking sheet to cool completely.
  • Once the chocolate is hardened on these banana treats, you can serve them right away.

Suggestions and Alternatives

  • Use any kind of chocolate so long as it melts well.
  • Substitute coconut oil for shortening.
  • Other toppings you might want to try include: coconut flakes or almonds, crushed pistachios, peanut butter or other nut butters, mini M&Ms, and crushed Oreo cookies.
  • Dip the bananas into yogurt instead, and then put your toppings on for a healthy alternative.

How Do You Make Banana Yogurt Pops?

Make frozen banana yogurt pops by dipping the bananas into yogurt instead of chocolate, then put your toppings on and refreeze.

Are Chocolate Dipped Bananas Healthy?

While this is a great way to add more bananas into your diet, the chocolate and toppings you may add are full of sugar so this would not be considered a healthy treat. However, you can make this recipe healthier by using dark chocolate or yogurt instead of milk chocolate, and chose more nutritious toppings like shredded coconut and crushed peanuts.

How Long Does It Take For Bananas To Freeze?

Bananas will take at least four hours to freeze thoroughly, which is ideal for making this recipe as you will be dipping them into chocolate which is slightly warm. Freezing them the whole way through means they won’t be mushy by the time you finish making them.

How Do I Store This Recipe?

Refrigerator: These chocolate dipped bananas last for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Freezer: Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and store in the freezer until ready to serve. They will last for up to 3 months in this way. Remove from the freezer for 5-10 minutes to soften a bit before serving.
