Walking Strawberry Pretzel Salad Recipe
Walking desserts are the latest craze, and it is easy to see why. Built right into individual bags of pretzels or cookies, they are the perfect handheld treat. I designed this recipe to completely avoid the soggy mess that ruins some walking desserts. By crushing the unsalted pretzels into smaller chunks and layering the simple ingredients just before serving, you get the perfect balance of creamy pudding, juicy strawberries, and fresh crunch in every bite.

What Sets Our Recipe Apart
- Fresh crunch every time – I crush the mini pretzels just before assembling so they stay crisp and never turn into a soggy mess like other recipes.
- Balanced layers – My creamy pudding, sweet fruit, and Jell-O layers are perfectly portioned so every bite is fresh, fruity, and never overly sweet.
- Built for easy eating – By layering everything right inside individual bags of pretzels, my version keeps things simple, portable, and a lot less messy than traditional pretzel salads.

- Start by carefully crushing the pretzels in the pretzel bags.
- Open the bags and set them into a bowl or on taco holders to stand upright.
- Add about 3/4 of a vanilla pudding cup to each bag.
- Add 3/4 of a strawberry jello cup to each bag.
- Add 4-5 pieces of chopped strawberry.
- Top with a swirl of Cool Whip (use a piping bag).
- Add extra chopped strawberries and pretzels.
- Crush the pretzels right before assembling to prevent them from getting stale.
- Use a frosting bag for the Cool Whip to make pretty swirls.
- Stand the individual bags upright in a large bowl or large casserole dish while you layer the ingredients to make assembly easier.
- Gently fold the tops of the bags outward before filling to give yourself more room to work and keep the bags stable.
- Have all your pudding cups, jello cups, and chopped strawberries opened and ready so the layering process is quick and smooth.
- Tap the bag gently on the counter after adding the pudding and jello layers to help everything settle into the bottom without smashing the pretzels.
- Always leave enough space at the top of each bag to swirl the Cool Whip without it spilling over when guests dig in.
Fun Suggestions
- Pudding – Swap the vanilla pudding cups for cheesecake pudding cups if you want a richer, more indulgent cheesecake filling flavor.
- Pie filling – Add a spoonful of strawberry pie filling between the pudding and jello layers for an extra burst of strawberry sweetness.
- Graham crackers – Sprinkle crushed graham crackers on top instead of extra pretzels if you want a softer, classic dessert bar vibe.
- Bananas – Make a walking banana pudding version by swapping the strawberry jello and strawberries for banana pudding and banana slices.
- Cheesecake – Stir a few tablespoons of cheesecake pudding mix into the vanilla pudding cups for a thicker, creamier pudding layer.
- Fruit – Add a few extra chopped fresh fruit options like blueberries or raspberries if you want to mix up the flavors.
- Sprinkles – Use patriotic red, white and blue sprinkles on top for festive unique treats at summer parties, ball games, or 4th of July cookouts.
Storage Tips
- Refrigerator – Keep assembled Walking Strawberry Pretzel Salad bags in the refrigerator for up to 4 hours for the best texture.
- Freezer – This dessert is best enjoyed fresh and is not recommended for freezing because the pretzels lose their crunch.
Can I Use Instant Pudding Instead of Pudding Cups?
Yes, just prepare the instant pudding with cold milk according to package directions and chill until set before assembling.
What is The Best Way to Stand Up the Pretzel Bags?
Use a large bowl, casserole dish, or taco holders to keep the bags upright while filling them.
Can I Make These the Night Before?
It’s best to make them right before serving for the best crunch. Otherwise, the pretzels will absorb moisture and turn soggy.
