Everyone loves sugar cookies and this is an easy way to bring them up a notch. Bake circle sugar cookies and stack them, them top with a sprinkle star! Another fun Christmas dessert recipe to do with kids are our red, green, and white swirled Christmas cupcakes!
Stacked Christmas Tree Cookies
These cookies are perfect for kids to do. There is only one shape to cut out and you get to roll the cookies in nonpareils or sprinkles. Perfect for little hands. Yet, after you stack the sugar cookies, they’ll resemble Christmas trees and look so fancy!
And we love our pinwheel sugar cookie recipe. It looks complicated, but is really pretty easy to accomplish. Just make two sugar cookie recipes and color them. We did blue and white, but you could do green and red, or any color combinations.
Stacked Sugar Cookie Ingredients
You don’t need any fancy appliances or equipment for this Christmas cookie recipe. You don’t even need fancy cookie cutters — the bottom of glasses would work just fine. Just be sure to have three different sizes.
That being said, I used a stand mixer to thoroughly mix the sugar cookie dough. And, I have three round cookie cutters. You can get cookie cutters at most craft stores or on Amazon.
To make the cookies, we use a from scratch sugar cookie recipe. Here’s what you’ll need:
flour – I use all purpose flour. You can sift the flour for best results
butter – use unsalted
sugar, eggs, salt – all regular sugar cookie ingredients
vanilla extract – if you can, use a good vanilla extract, not imitation
frosting – for this recipe, it’s perfectly acceptable to use canned frosting. Because you’re not using a ton of frosting, just save yourself some time and buy is already made.
nonpareils or other candy decorations – sprinkles, all colors. This is where you get to decide. I stuck with limited colors so it would have a strong impact, but the sky is the limit.
How To Make Stacked Christmas Tree Cookies
- Start by mixing the sugar, butter, vanilla, and eggs. Mix until creamy.
- Blend the flour and salt then add the flour mixture and blend on low speed until incorporated.
- Wrap dough in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 2 hours. This allows the cookie dough to be firm and it will cook without spreading!
- Roll the dough on a floured surface until it’s about a 1/8” thick.
- For each tree, cut all 3 cookie cutter sizes.
- Bake at 375° for 10 minutes or until just golden brown. Don’t over bake. Let the cookies finish cooking on the cookie sheet on the counter.
- Spread frosting along the edges of the round cookies and roll in candy decorations.
- Assemble trees by placing a dollop of frosting in the center of the largest cookie shape, topping with medium size cookie shape, adding another dollop of frosting in the center of that cookie, and completing the tree tower with the smallest cookie shape.
This is a great cookie recipe to use for a party. Get the kids together and put the cookies and decorations in from of them. I could see this as a great classroom project too! Just make the cookies ahead of time, then set out the sprinkles, and frosting. Let the kids dream up their own designs for the trees.
