Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot
If you have hard boiled egg lovers in your home and you are still making hard boiled eggs on the stove I am here to tell you that there is a much easier way to cook your hard boiled eggs which is faster, easier, and like 100% fail proof when it comes to cooking hard boiled eggs which is making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot!
A little bit of a back story of how I discovered this Instant Pot Hard boiled egg secret.
Years ago I used to swear by the Julia Child way of making hard boiled eggs. It’s time consuming and hard. I eventually started just doing them the way my mom did on the stove top.
A few months back I signed up to bring deviled eggs to a church pot luck. I began cooking my eggs on the stove as I had always done in the past. After cooking my eggs, I began peeling them. To my horror, the shells literally were not coming off!
To make it even worse, every time I tried to peel the eggs it was just tearing the egg whites. After peeling the eggs I was left with torn-up egg whites that looked awful.
At that point, I had no choice but to take my awful looking deviled eggs to the church pot luck because I committed to bring them. I was so embarrassed by the way the eggs looked because of how difficult they were to peel.
I decided at that moment, right then and there, that I would NEVER AGAIN make deviled eggs again … that was until I found out about the fail proof method of cooking hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot.
If you haven’t invested in an Instant Pot yet, I am here to tell you that an Instant Pot is 1000 times worth the investment even if you just use it to cook your hard boiled eggs.
Every single time I make hard boiled eggs in the instant pot, they come out perfect. The shells peel off with ease.
I am sharing that secret to cooking hard boiled eggs with you which is the 5-5-5 method.
How To Make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot
Making hard boiled eggs in the instant pot is very simple if you follow the 5-5-5 method.
The 5-5-5 method is to pressure cook for 5 minutes, then let the pot naturally release for 5 minutes and then giving the eggs a cold ice bath for 5 minutes.
You do not need fancy equipment to make hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot, but I recommend getting an egg steamer basket rack because it is super helpful, but not necessary.
I promise once you try this method you will never go back to making hard boiled eggs on the stovetop ever again!
Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot
- Place the number of eggs you desire to cook upside down in the Instant Pot. This can be in a basket, on a rack, or just on the trivet that came with your Instant Pot.
- Add at least 1 cup of water to your Instant Pot, pouring it directly over the eggs that you have already placed in there.
- Place the lid on the Instant Pot. Be sure to turn the knob to seal to prevent it from venting while trying to come to pressure.
- Push the Manual button and then the plus or minus button to set the cooking time to 5 minutes.
- Prepare an ice bath while the eggs are coming to pressure. I grab a large mixing bowl and fill it with cold water and lots of ice cubes.
- Naturally release your Instant Pot for 5 minutes once your eggs have cooked.
- Remove eggs from Instant Pot quickly and place them in the prepared ice bath.
- Allow eggs to cool for 5 minutes in the ice bath.
- Peel the eggs by gently cracking them on a hard surface and slowly pulling off the shell.
Tips and Notes for the Best Hard Boiled Eggs
- Hard boiled eggs last up to one week in the fridge with the shell on or peeled.
- Refrigerate your hard boiled eggs immediately after cooking.
- Use tongs or an oven mitt when you remove the eggs from the Instant Pot. They will be very hot.
How many eggs can I cook at one time?
One of the number one questions people ask when cooking hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot is how many eggs can I cook at once? This all depends on the size of your Instant Pot. If you are using a 6-quart Instant Pot you’ll find that you can easily fit two dozen in it at one time.
If you use the racks that I recommend, you can cook 14 at a time – which I find to be plenty.
Can the Eggs Touch?
If you are not using a rack you can allow the eggs to touch. It does not matter if you stack the eggs on top of each other.
Why Did My Eggs Crack?
Sometimes you will find an egg that cracks during the hard boiling process. This could be caused by a weak egg. I have heard that you can try covering the eggs completely with water versus using just adding one cup of water to see if it prevents your eggs from cracking.
Why is an Ice Bath Needed After Cooking?
The last step of the 5-5-5 hard boiling egg method is placing the eggs in an ice bath. This is to help prevent the eggs from overcooking. It’s an important step and you don’t want to skip it when making hard boiled eggs. The ice bath also helps make the eggs a lot easier to peel.
How to Place Eggs in the Instant Pot
When making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot, it is best if you place the eggs upside down in the rack or the pot if you don’t have a rack. The rack makes keeping the eggs upright super simple. I believe it’s the secret to perfect hard boiled eggs!
This allows the yolk and the egg to drop to the bottom of the shell while cooking creating a hollow space at the bottom of the egg. This is important not only to help with the cooking process, but it helps make the peeling process so much easier!
Can You Freeze Hard Boiled Eggs?
Freezing hard boiled eggs is not recommended. Frozen egg whites don’t thaw well.
However, if you want to freeze the yolk that should turn out just fine. The yolk can be frozen in the freezer in an airtight container for up to three months.
