Ingredients Needed

Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe. Scroll down to the full recipe card for the specific amounts.

Ingredients for an eggnog pie on a marble surface, including a graham cracker crust, cream cheese, whipped topping, canned whipped cream, instant pudding mix, and a small dish of spices.
  • Instant vanilla pudding mix – Creates a creamy filling that sets beautifully without baking.
  • Cold full-fat eggnog – We used store-bought eggnog for convenience, but feel free to use Homemade Eggnog (minus the alcohol) if you prefer.
  • Frozen whipped topping, thawed – Adds a light, airy and creamy texture to the filling.
  • Pre-made Graham cracker crust – You can use a store-bought Graham cracker crust or make this Homemade Graham Cracker Crust.
  • Piped whipped cream, for garnish – Adds a decorative and deliciously creamy finish to the pie.
  • Ground nutmeg, for garnish – A sprinkle of nutmeg ties everything together with classic holiday flavor.

How to Make a Creamy Eggnog Pie

Here are my step-by-step instructions so you can make this recipe with ease. For the full, printable recipe with amounts and temperatures, scroll down to the recipe card below.

Step One: Mix the Pudding

  • In a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the instant pudding mix and eggnog for 2 minutes, or until slightly thickened. If you don’t have a stand mixer, just add the ingredients to a large mixing bowl and use a hand mixer.

Step Two: Add the Whipped Topping

  • Use a spatula to fold the whipped topping into the eggnog mixture until just combined. Spoon the mixture into the graham cracker pie crust.

Step Three: Chill in Refrigerator

  • Refrigerate the pie for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight.
  • To serve, pipe whipped cream on top of the pie and sprinkle with nutmeg. Slice and enjoy!
  • Full-fat eggnog is the way to go for the creamiest texture and richest flavor. Reduced-fat versions just don’t give the same results.
  • Make sure the eggnog is chilled before mixing because this helps the filling set up perfectly.
  • Refrigerate the pie for at least 4 hours, but overnight is even better for a firm, sliceable texture.
  • This pie can be made up to 2 days ahead. Keep it loosely covered with plastic wrap in the fridge and add the whipped cream topping just before serving.
  • Frozen whipped topping like Cool Whip is folded into the filling, while Reddi-Wip or homemade whipped cream makes a great garnish for the top. Both options are simple and delicious!

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigerate – Cover the pie loosely with plastic wrap or foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For the best results, add the whipped cream garnish just before serving.
  • Freezer – This pie can be frozen for up to a month. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. Then you can just thaw the pie in the refrigerator overnight before serving. Add the whipped cream garnish and nutmeg topping after it has fully thawed.

Recipe Variations

  • Boozy eggnog pie – Add a splash of brandy, rum (or rum extract), or bourbon to the pie mixture for an adult twist.
  • Crust – Try a gingersnap crust or an Oreo crust for a fun alternative to the classic graham cracker crust.
  • Spices – Swap the nutmeg for a pinch of cinnamon or even a mix of cinnamon and cloves for a slightly different spiced flavor.
  • Chocolate– You can add a layer of melted chocolate or chocolate ganache to the crust before adding the filling.
  • Peppermint – Sprinkle crushed candy canes or peppermint candies over the whipped cream for a festive touch.
  • Eggnog latte pie – Stir in a teaspoon of instant espresso powder for a coffee-flavored version.
  • Caramel Drizzle – Drizzle caramel sauce over the top for extra sweetness.
  • Nuts– Sprinkle toasted pecans, walnuts, or sliced almonds on top for added crunch and flavor.

FAQs

What does eggnog taste like?

Eggnog has a creamy, sweet flavor with hints of vanilla and warm spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. If it is spiked, you’ll also taste rum, bourbon, or brandy.

Can I Make this Pie in a Different Pan?

If you do not have a pie pan, you can make this recipe in a square baking dish. You’ll need to create a crust with Graham cracker crumbs and a little melted butter.

What can I serve with this pie?

This pie pairs wonderfully with a hot cup of coffee, cocoa, or even a holiday cocktail.

Is this pie kid-friendly?

Yes, as written, this recipe is completely kid-friendly because it does not have alcohol in it.

Why is my filling not setting properly?

If the filling is too soft, it may be because the eggnog or pudding mix wasn’t cold enough. Be sure both are well-chilled before mixing. Using instant pudding mix is also key because cook-and-serve pudding will not set the same way.
