- Frozen shrimp – When buying frozen shrimp, check the listed ingredients on the label. You should only see two ingredients, water and shrimp. Some companies use preservatives or other ingredients that can give shrimp an odd and not so fresh taste.
- Fresh shrimp – If you’re buying fresh shrimp for this recipe, you’ll want to look for sign of freshness. Shrimp should feel firm to the touch and should not have a strong “fishy” or ammonia smell.
- Thawing shrimp quickly – If you’re need a quick meal, but forgot to thaw the shrimp, place them in a bowl of cold water (not warm) and they should thaw within an hour. Change out the water about every 15 minutes.
- Amount per person – If feeding a crowd, you should plan on approximately 3 ounces of uncooked shrimp per person.
- Shrimp size – Determine size shrimp based on the type of recipe. Jumbo shrimp are excellent for grilling and sheet pan meals. For pan searing and pasta dishes, medium to large are ideal.

- Spices – If you like an extra spicy sauce, you can add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper or hot sauce.
- Skinny bang bang shrimp pasta – If you want to cut back on some of the fat, you can use plain Greek yogurt or sour cream to make the sauce instead of the mayo. You can also use gluten-free pasta instead of regular pasta.
- Protein – This sauce works great over chicken, chicken tenders, or even crab cakes.
- Pasta – You can use your favorite pasta with this recipe, but you can also serve the shrimp and sauce over rice or even savory mashed potatoes.
