The Walmart grocery app is a helpful tool to save you time and money when buying and shopping for groceries. In a nutshell, the Walmart grocery app lets you order your groceries on your phone or tablet, submit your order and choose a time for pickup. Plus, unlike other online shopping apps, Walmart’s grocery service is FREE of charge.

Walmart got a new service that has got to be in every busy mom’s arsenal – they are offering a grocery pick up service free of charge via their Walmart grocery app!  I did a Facebook Live from the Balancing Motherhood Facebook page and I talked about my experience with the Walmart grocery app – where you order all your groceries from the Walmart Grocery app and they deliver it to your car. Let me tell you, it was a great experience! And, I mean great! I’m already organizing my next order. This is a game changer because it saves time. And, time is money. But the beauty is that it doesn’t cost you any more money!

How does the Walmart grocery app work?

The Walmart grocery app is easy to use. Download it from the app store for your phone (you can also go to grocery.walmart.com), create an account, and start adding grocery items to your cart. Finish shopping and go to check out and you’ll be prompted to select a pick up time. Finish your order — you won’t get charged until you pick up the order.

Just download the Walmart grocery app – this is a separate app from the regular Walmart app. It’s orange in the iTunes store. Sign in and start making selections. When you sign up you’ll put in your debit or credit card for when you place orders.

The app is pretty easy to use and has a menu to find what you’re looking for. Or you can use the search bar to find specific items or brands. Place all of your items in the cart and then you’ll need to select a check out time.

Check out times will show based on availability. For example, I wanted to pick up my order on Sunday, but they had no Sunday slots left so I had to wait a day. I ended up choosing a 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM slot on a Tuesday. My delivery man told me that Sunday and Mondays are the busiest days for pick up. Good to know.

Walmart grocery app questions

Q: How are the expiration dates on food? 

A: I ordered organic milk and the date on the milk in my cart didn’t expire for over a month. Now, I have to say that organic milk usually has a long expiration date. Much longer than standard milk so I don’t know what I would have received if I’d ordered regular milk.

Q: Where do I park?

A: There are several (our store had 6 or 7) prime parking spots along the side of the store. They are clearly marked for grocery pick up and give you a phone number to call the store and let them know you’ve arrived for our pick up. This number is a cell phone for the person who is on grocery delivery duty for the day.

Q: Do I have to get out of the car?

A: Not if you don’t want to. I do just to help the person loading my trunk. Sometimes there are substitutions offered and the delivery person will review those orders before they add the item to your final purchase price.

Q: What about produce? How was it when you got home? 

A: Produce was good. I ordered bananas and they came in a grocery bag with a large, red, “fragile” sicker. Everything that was fragile had the sticker – bread, eggs.

Q: Can I purchase alcohol?

A: Yes, you can purchase alcohol: they have beer, wine, and other spirits on the Walmart grocery app.

Q: What can’t I buy?

A: I talked to an associate in the store about the Walmart grocery app one day and she said you can’t buy big items like a TV. They aren’t going to bring a TV to your car. And, apparel isn’t on the list. Nor are garden items.

Q: How much does the Walmart grocery app cost? 

A: Zero. There are zero fees to use the Walmart grocery app or the delivery service.

Q: How far in advance do I need to place my order before pick up?

A: This depends on your store, but my experience with the Walmart grocery app is that I need to complete my shopping 24 hours before I want to pick up my grocery order. Each store has limits on how many “slots” they have to grocery “delivery” so it will depend on your location. My best tip is to start your list throughout the week, then select a time for pick up well in advance. The night before your scheduled pick up, you can look over your list and add items to it.

Q: Can I make changes on the Walmart grocery app once I’ve placed my order?

Yes, you can make additions and subtractions to your order up to the day before delivery is scheduled. Walmart says there are some exceptions to this, however.

Q: Where can I find my Walmart grocery app receipt?

A: The receipt will be emailed to the email address associated with the account on the Walmart grocery app.

Q: Will my Walmart grocery app order be connected to my Walmart Savings Catcher app?

No, you will need to add your grocery order to the Walmart Savings Catcher app manually. (Note to Walmart, this would be a great feature to add!)
