Ways to Use Homemade Italian Seasoning

This is a very versatile seasoning you can use in many of your favorite recipes. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

  • Vinaigrette or dressing Add some of your homemade blend to make a quick Italian salad dressing with a little balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar and a good quality olive oil in a mason jar. Add a little salt and pepper to taste, then tighten the lid and give it a good shake.
  • Pasta sauces Homemade Marinara wouldn’t be complete without savory Italian herbs. You can also use some in homemade Alfredo Sauce.
  • Italian entrees Add it to homemade meatballs, Meatloaf of any type of chicken recipe like Chicken Alfredo.
  • Add flavor to soups Add savory herb flavor to homemade soups like this Italian Wedding Soup or this rich and delicious slow cooker Minestrone Soup.
  • Italian bread crumbs Make your own homemade Italian breadcrumbs by adding some of this seasoning to regular breadcrumbs or panko.

 Italian Herb Variations:

  • Spicy blend – If you want a little kick added to your own Italian seasoning, add a pinch of red pepper flakes and a little bit of cayenne pepper.
  • Garlicky herb Want to add a little garlic or onion flavor? Just add a teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder.
  • Skip the marjoram Marjoram is not always a common herb to find. If you’re unable in your area, you can order it online or simply just skip it. The seasoning mix will be just as tasty without it. You can also add about ½ tablespoon dried sage in its place, but it isn’t necessary.

Homemade Italian Seasoning Recipe Tips

With a few of these simple tips you can extend the shelf-life of your homemade spice blends:

  • Keep your seasonings in a dark place, away from direct sunlight, like a pantry or spice cabinet. Exposure to air will cause your herbs to become stale.
  • Store spices and seasonings in a sealed glass jar or other airtight jar.
  • Dried herb blends do not freeze well because it typically causes moisture. Most spices and seasonings will not hold up well when exposed to moisture, which can cause them to mold.
  • Heat will also cause seasonings to lose their flavor quickly. It’s best to keep them in a cabinet or pantry that is completely away from any heat source like your stove or dishwasher.
  • Label the jars with the date you made your seasoning mixes, so you’ll know when it’s time to make a new big batch.
  • For optimal freshness, homemade seasoning blends should be used within 9 months to a year.
  • Use your own blend the same exact way you would any store-bought blends. If it calls for 1 Tablespoon of Italian seasoning in a recipe, you’ll use the same amount of your homemade blends.

Can I Use Fresh Herbs?

While fresh herbs always make a great addition to Italian dishes, if you’re wanting to add them to a jarred seasoning blend, you will have to dry them first. Fresh herbs contain moisture and when closed up in an airtight container they can cause mold.
