Ritz Cracker Casserole (Easy Chicken Casserole)

My Ritz Cracker Casserole is the ultimate comfort food dinner that my family requests at least twice a month. It comes together with simple pantry ingredients, uses a rotisserie chicken to skip the hard work, and bakes up into a creamy, hearty dish topped with the most irresistible buttery cracker crust. This is the kind of meal that disappears fast.

My Easy Ritz Cracker Chicken Casserole
I started making this recipe on one of those nights where I had a rotisserie chicken sitting on the counter and absolutely no plan for dinner. I wanted something different and knew the Ritz crackers would add a great buttery flavor profile. Now it’s a recipe I use on repeat.
My husband goes back for seconds every single time, and my kids love the crunchy cracker topping. The creamy chicken filling is rich and savory, and the buttery cracker crust on top gives it that satisfying crunch that makes the whole dish feel special, even though it takes almost zero effort to put together.

Why My Recipe is the Best
- Rotisserie chicken shortcut – Using a store-bought rotisserie chicken means you skip the longest part of cooking and get straight to building the casserole. It shreds perfectly and stays tender after baking.
- Creamy, savory filling – The combination of cream cheese, heavy cream, sharp cheddar, and a touch of Dijon mustard creates a sauce that is rich and full of flavor without being heavy or complicated.
- That buttery cracker topping – Crushed Ritz crackers tossed in melted butter bake up into a golden, crunchy crust that takes this casserole from ordinary to completely irresistible.
Ritz Cracker Casserole Ingredients

Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe. Scroll down to the full recipe card for the specific amounts.
- Ritz crackers – Two sleeves (about 35 crackers), crushed. They form the signature buttery, crunchy topping that sets this casserole apart from any other.
- Butter – Melted and mixed with the crushed crackers to help them brown and crisp up beautifully in the oven.
- Whipped cream cheese – 4 ounces at room temperature. Whipped cream cheese blends into the sauce much more smoothly than block cream cheese, so don’t skip that detail.
- Heavy cream – Gives the filling its rich, creamy texture. You can use half-and-half in a pinch but the sauce won’t be quite as thick.
- Chicken stock – Adds savory depth to the sauce and keeps the filling from being too heavy. Use low-sodium if you prefer to control the saltiness.
- Dijon mustard – Just two teaspoons, but it makes a big difference. It adds a subtle tang and depth of flavor that makes people wonder what that “secret ingredient” is.
- Onion powder – Gives the filling a savory, rounded flavor without any chopping required.
- Black pepper – Balances the richness of the cream sauce.
- Sharp cheddar cheese – Two cups of shredded sharp cheddar melted into the filling for big, bold cheese flavor. Shred it yourself if you can since it melts better than pre-shredded.
- Cooked, shredded chicken – About 4 cups, which is roughly one rotisserie chicken. This is the ultimate use for a store-bought bird.
- Chopped parsley – For garnish. It adds a pop of color and a little freshness on top.
Substitutions or Variations
- No heavy cream? Half-and-half works as a substitute, though the filling will be slightly less rich and thick.
- Want a lighter version? Swap the whipped cream cheese for reduced-fat cream cheese and use whole milk instead of heavy cream.
- No rotisserie chicken? Use any cooked, shredded chicken you have on hand. Leftover baked chicken or poached chicken breasts both work perfectly.
- Want to bulk it up? Stir in a cup of frozen peas, cooked broccoli florets, or sauteed mushrooms with the chicken for extra vegetables.
How to Make Ritz Cracker Casserole
Here are my step-by-step instructions so you can make this recipe with ease. For the full, printable recipe with amounts and temperatures, scroll down to the recipe card below.

- Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, combine the crushed Ritz crackers with the melted butter and toss until evenly coated. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix together the whipped cream cheese, heavy cream, chicken stock, Dijon mustard, onion powder, black pepper, and shredded cheddar cheese until smooth and well combined.

- Add the shredded chicken to the cream sauce and stir until everything is fully combined.
- Transfer the chicken mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out into an even layer.

- Top with the buttered cracker crumbs, spreading them in an even layer over the filling.
- Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 45 minutes, until the filling is bubbling around the edges.

- Remove the foil and bake for a few more minutes if you want the topping a little more golden. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.
- Use room temperature cream cheese. Cold cream cheese won’t blend smoothly into the sauce. Pull it out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you start.
- Don’t crush the crackers too finely. Aim for a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks so the topping has texture and doesn’t turn to dust when baked.
- Cover with foil for most of the bake time. This is the key step that keeps the crackers from over-browning before the filling is fully heated through.
- Shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese is coated with anti-caking agents that prevent it from melting as smoothly. A block of sharp cheddar and a box grater makes a big difference.
- Serve immediately for the best topping. The cracker crust is at its crispiest right out of the oven. If it sits for a while, the topping will soften but it’s still delicious.
- Make it a full meal. Serve over egg noodles or steamed rice to stretch the casserole further and feed a bigger crowd.

Ritz Cracker Casserole FAQs
Can I make this casserole ahead of time?
Yes! Assemble the filling in the baking dish, cover it tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add the cracker topping right before baking so it stays crispy. You may need to add 5 to 10 minutes to the bake time since it’s starting cold.
Can I freeze Ritz Cracker Casserole?
The filling freezes well, but the cracker topping does not. If you want to freeze it, assemble and freeze just the filling. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, add fresh buttered cracker crumbs on top, and bake as directed.
Can I use canned chicken?
You can, though rotisserie or freshly cooked chicken gives much better texture and flavor. If you use canned chicken, drain it very well before stirring it into the sauce.
My topping browned too fast. What happened?
Make sure to cover the dish with foil for the full 45 minutes. The foil is what protects the crackers from the direct oven heat during the long bake time.
Can I use regular block cream cheese instead of whipped?
Yes, just make sure it’s fully at room temperature before you mix it. Block cream cheese will take more effort to blend smooth, so beat it well before adding the other ingredients.
Storage Instructions
- Refrigerate – Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F covered with foil to warm through, then uncover for the last few minutes to re-crisp the topping.
- Freeze – Freeze the casserole filling (without the cracker topping) for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, add fresh buttered crackers, and bake as directed.
- Reheat – Oven (best method): Cover with foil and bake at 350° F for 20–25 minutes, or until heated through. Remove foil for the last 5 minutes to re-crisp the topping. Microwave (quick): Heat individual portions in 60-second intervals until warm. Note: the cracker topping will soften.
