Finding healthy snacks for kids can be a real chore. Add in summertime fun and the last thing a busy mom needs is to be searching for a healthy snack option.
You need something that’s ready for the beach, the pool, or playtime at the park.
This year pick healthy snacks, know before-you-go, and enjoy yourself guilt free.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and veggies will be your healthiest snack option. No way around that. Carrots and cucumbers make a great healthy snack for kids packed with water to help keep you hydrated during the hot summer days. I like to pack a small container of ranch dressing for dipping.
All of the fresh in-season fruit makes a great sweet snack to enjoy and is great on-the-go.
Watermelon will keep you hydrated and you can eat as much as you want without really affecting your calorie intake.
All it takes is a small cooler to keep your fruits and veggies fresh. And, you can prepackage them in mini containers for quick grab-and-go snack.
Healthy Freezer Pops
Healthy homemade freezer pops are a great cool-down summertime snack. Put your favorite fruit, yogurt, and even a little protein powder for a grown up version. Blend until you have a smoothie consistency and pour into freezer pop molds for a healthy summertime snack perfect to replace high-calorie ice cream treats.
No time to let freezer pops become solid? Make a fruit smoothie with a big helping of peanut butter for added protein.
Hummus
Homemade hummus is easier to make than you may thing, but if you don’t have time to whip up a batch, grab a container at the store to keep on hand for a quick snack. Hummus pairs well with carrots, celery, and sliced peppers so you don’t always have to rely on tortilla chips for this healthy snack idea.
If you need some crunch with your hummus, try baking pita chips. Take pita bread, coat with a bit of olive oil, cut into quarters and lay on a baking sheet. Salt both sides and bake at 400 degrees for about 7 minutes.
Not a hummus fan? Try guacamole, or fresh salsa with your veggie sticks.
Healthy Snacks on the Go
Need a healthy summertime snack for on the go? How about a quick trail mix? Use your favorite multi-grain cereal, some mini pretzel sticks, raisins, and a handful of chocolate chips for sweetness. For a protein boost, add roasted peanuts or cashews.
Need something pre-made you can toss into your bag? Fruit and veggie snack pouches, protein bars, and beef jerky all make great no cook, ready to go, and can hang out at the bottom of your bag as summertime snacks. The best thing to look for the perfect healthy summertime snack is to look for is something easy to make so so you can have it on hand and not be tempted by pre-made junk food.
Grill Out!
It is just too hot in the summer to keep cooking hot meals. Grilling a lot of chicken breasts at once allows you to keep your house cool and make a batch of grilled chicken snack wraps that you can freeze and save for later.
Add in vegetables, tzatziki sauce, or mayo to turn a tortilla or pita into the perfect snack or small lunch. These are great to make ahead and bring to the park or pool.
