How to Make Homemade Teriyaki Sauce
Step One: Mix the Ingredients
- Put all ingredients into a medium frying pan.
- With a rubber spatula, mix well over medium heat and bring to a boil.
- Once the sauce is boiling, reduce the heat to low.
Step Two: Thicken the Sauce
- Mix the cornstarch and water together in a small cup, until the mixture is very smooth. (Note: It may be thick at first.)
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and mix until fully blended. This will serve as a thickening agent for the sauce.
- Cover the sauce and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes while stirring frequently.
- Pour the sauce into a serving bowl or mason jar and allow it to cool completely to room temperature before serving.
Tips and Suggestions
- It’s important that your cornstarch is diluted in equal parts water before you add it to the sauce. If you skip this step, the sauce will become clumpy.
- If your sauce is too thin, you can add more of the cornstarch and water mixture. Start with ½ tablespoon at a time.
- If the sauce is too thick, make a mixture of equal parts water, soy sauce, and pineapple juice and add it to the sauce.
Variations
- You can add sesame seeds to your sauce for added flavor and texture, or toss in some red pepper flakes if you like a little spice.
- For a gluten-free version of this sauce, use gluten-free tamari or coconut aminos in place of the soy sauce. And if you’re watching your sodium, you can use low sodium soy sauce.
- You can substitute maple syrup for the honey in this recipe.
- Use fresh grated ginger in place of the ground. You’ll need about 4 teaspoons of fresh ginger for every teaspoon of ground ginger.)
