We know that millionaires and the famous have lavish parties for themselves and their kids. We’ve read the reports about designer wardrobes for toddlers, but I hadn’t quite heard that these over the top parties — in the tune of tens of thousands of dollars — are being put on by regular people. I say regular people, but it’s not the average joe who can slap down $15,000 for a birthday party. According to a piece by “Good Morning America,” it is happening.
I only hope that the TV shows that highlight these parties doesn’t affect people who really can’t afford an extravagant party for their 4 year old or even their 16 year old.
There is pressure to be the parent who puts on the best party, but let’s get real here the best parties are those that you can afford. That are reasonable. That fit within what is age-appropriate for your kid and his/her friends. You don’t have to spend two grand on a cake from a fancy bakery. Consider what it’s teaching the kids who think they have to have all of these “things” in order to be happy.
Watch the “GMA” segment to see some of the extravagant parties then tell me what you think.

This is just crazy. My daughter is turning five next month. She’ll have her party at home, with a few friends from preschool and a homemade cake. If we splurge, there will be a pinata. And I think no matter what we do, she will love it, because it will be her big day. We don’t need to spend thousands, or even hundreds of dollars to make it all about her.

I had a birthday party for my 3 year old and 3 of her friends for $500. At the time, I thought $500 was a lot, but was happy that she had a great time and appreciated it. The little girl in this video didn’t look like she appreciated the party and she certainly didn’t understand the cost.
