Last weekend I took the kids to the North Carolina Arboretum, because I read online there was a Lego exhibit. On Friday, I wrote about the leaves we saw there, but today, today, we get to talk about LEGOS!
There is an exhibit that just opened by Artist Sean Kenney which is displaying 15 sculptures all made from Legos. Here’s a sly fox.
Mr. Fox is chasing an innocent rabbit. Run rabbit, run!
There’s a larger than life hummingbird.
And a big bisson. Or is that a buffalo? I don’t know my wild animals.
He’s a big guy. Here’s a close up of the detail of all the Legos. Aside each sculpture sits a sign detailing how many Legos were used in the sculpture. Let’s just say there were A LOT in this one.
Not that the sculptures aren’t photo ops in themselves, but there is a large Lego photo cut out stand so you can get the kiddos pics. (PSST — we saw some adults without kids doing this and snapping pics too!)
Inside the main Arboretum building there is a kid’s Lego exhibit. This is just as amazing as the professional one, let me tell you. Here’s a working pinball machine.
Here kitty, kitty, kitty. What a sweet display of a kitty trying to grab an innocent goldfish out of his bowl.
And what about this one. Yep, it’s done by a kid. Well, a teenager, but still. I love the detail of the state of Tennessee on the bottom.
Yep, another kid did this one. Can you believe it? Amazing. Teenager category was smaller, but the sculptures were simply amazing.
They’re having a people’s choice contest and everyone gets to vote for their favorite. There will be one winner in each age category. This was my daughter’s favorite. Let’s just say, I’m sure the pink pushed it over the edge for her.
This was my son’s favorite. There’s a lot going on in that castle.
Here’s a closer look. I love the detail of using different clear blue Legos for the water.
This is my favorite. It’s the periodic table of elements! Maybe I’m a science geek after all. I love the ingenuity in this one. Sometimes simple is best.
The exhibit runs until January 5, 2014, so if you’re in Asheville over the holidays be sure to add this quick stop to your list of things to do.
