People who blog for a living know it’s hard work. There’s the site management (HTML, CSS, template and widget updates), and of course the writing. And, that’s not just writing posts. It’s creating a list of what you want to share with your readers, crafting a post, editing for grammar and spelling, and adding images.
Images alone can take up hours for every post. There’s the shooting of the image, getting it to the computer, cropping, and uploading to the post. Whew! I’m tried and I didn’t even mention SEO (search engine optimization and marketing).
It is a lot of work. So much work that it can take months to get the perfect site ready to launch. This morning, I was reminded to not wait until everything is perfect. Guy Kawasaki says, “Don’t wait for perfection¦ do the best you can and ship.”
This is something I already know and a philosophy I agree with, but seem to have forgotten when it comes to my own product. When I launched this site in August 2007 I did so knowing it wasn’t perfect: Far from it. But, I launched BalancingMotherhood.com anyway. One of the best decisions I made with this site was putting it up before I was ready. So, I’m here now, working on this site full time and am wondering how to ship it to my readers. Guy gave the right reminder this morning so I will be shipping it in pieces, as I get the updates ready. You won’t have to wait until it’s perfect to start to see improvements.
For one, I’m working on a new logo and possibly a new color scheme. It’s undecided which one I’ll choose, but it’s coming along. I’m also going to be changing the theme to allow for larger images and bigger fonts. This site needs punch!
So, take this journey with me. “Life isn’t perfect,” Guys says, and neither am I. Balancing Motherhood is a place we can all come to inspire each other every day on our journey of motherhood.
