“Today’s unthinkable’s are tomorrow’s reality,” said Scott Rigsby, last Sunday during a speech he gave about how he became an Ironman triathlete. An unthinkable is something you think you can’t do. Something that is so far out there you can’t possibly think it’s obtainable. Something like completing the Ironman, a 17-hour triathlon, as a double amputee.
Rigsby is an amazing testament to courage, strength and determination to do something difficult — something unthinkable. He’s an inspiration to others who are struggling, no matter how big or small the struggle.
On Sunday, I heard Rigsby speak about his life’s journey, how he lost his first leg in an automobile accident (he was dragged over 300 feet by a truck while bouncing on the asphalt road), and then how he made the decision to have his remaining leg removed. He spoke how he was called to run the Ironman, but failed at several initial attempts and almost gave up. He had to learn everything from the beginning. He rode a bike with a broken back, he ran with blood pooling in his prosthetic legs.
He speaks of having a dream, finding a support team, expecting to overcome the obstacle and making your dreams happen. One of the big takeaways from his speech for me was this:
If you can accomplish your dream by yourself, then your dream isn’t big enough.”
— Scott Rigsby
Wow. Have you ever looked at your dreams this way? It’s a powerful statement that sometimes we can’t do things alone. We need to ask for help. Encouragement.
Then, there is fear. “Fear is the biggest killer of our dreams,” he said. He talks about how fear overcomes us and we begin to doubt ourselves.
He reminds people to think about their vision and to operate in faith. Rigsby speaks openly about his faith and how he asked that if God would open a door for him, he would run through it. Run through it he did!
If you want to be inspired to do something bigger than you are, read his book, “Unthinkable,” where he chronicles his journey to become an Ironman.
