Two weeks ago I attended the Type-A Parent blog conference to network and learn more about the business of blogging. I have pages and pages of notes. Important takeaways like how to appropriately lead your readers from one piece of content to the next, turn your blog series into an e-book, 3-point lighting for video, and on and on. Learning information like this first-hand is pure gold.
I met other bloggers, I talked to reps from corporations.
I listened.
I learned.
But, if I only remember one thing, it’s this:
Be a CEO from the start!
This is so powerful. Be a CEO from the start of your business. This doesn’t just apply to bloggers. This is for any business owner. So many of us think about working hard at something we love, whether it’s a blog, selling baked goods from your kitchen, creating sell-able art or crafts on etsy, or having another type of small business. We are doing it because we love it. We love what we’re doing and want to be successful, but many times we shortchange ourselves and say it’s only a hobby.
We need to reframe this thought. We are the CEO of our business. We are in charge. This is a real business. We are here to make money. Yes, doing something we love, but the two can go together. Be the CEO. Think like a CEO. Make decisions like a CEO.
If we can do this from the start, we’ll be golden.
